Hi Everyone! I hope you're all having a lovely Wednesday! I just wanted to post a short update on the mama hen of eleven. I decided to name her Rosie. Yesterday as I sat on my backyard patio, she and her chicks hung out next to me. I was very surprised with how trusting she was of me and how she didn't seem to mind me being near her baby chicks.

This morning, I went out back to feed the chickens and I saw that Rosie and her chicks were in the backyard again. I think she may have moved into my backyard I just wanted to share some photos of Rosie, so you can see the beautiful mama hen of eleven

What a wonderful gift that she has chosen to live with you! You are very lucky. All those adorable chicks!

Quick Hattie Update

I went out to check on her and the whole tribe came running, including Hattie. She chowed down on some hamburger I had for them. She got right in the thick of the feeding frenzy. I think she is feeling better. I will continue to watch her closely.

More on Hattie

I wandered over to say hello to her and she stood up. Here is how she stood. Notice the tail down position. She is not feeling well.

I put out some meal worms on the deck to see her reaction. I was pleased that she came over and she did eat some. However as you can see from this picture, she was not willing to mix it up with the rest of the tribe. She is pecking at leftovers after they have moved on.

I would check her for being egg bound first with that posture Bob. Especially considering you are not sure when she last laid.
Next would be a poop check. That might tell you something. Bear in mind that they can still poop when egg bound if the egg is stuck above the end of the intestine tube.
You're right, she doesn't look well.
I hope it's nothing serious.

How adorable is that ❤ Does she just live on her own and come visit ? You are so lucky that she comes and hangs out at your house.

It surely looks like it will do a good job. How many would you expect to roost comfortably within it?

I've had four roost in a similar amount of space. I wasn't overly happy about it but it was what they chose.
If Cillin can persuade Mel to move in, rather than hang around with him and then go to roost with the rest that would be good. It's a bit over seven square feet floor area.

Thank you so much. This is where I was at mentally as well. I emptied the coop of eggs but of course I did not activate the camera. Eggs were laid but by whom, I can't confirm.

Hinge worried me once when she came down from roosting in the tree and had a posture very similar to that for a few minutes. I was just thinking whether to grab her then or wait until she had gone to roost when she laid a flat sided egg.
That usually means an egg has got stuck and another has bashed into it. She laid the second the next morning and has been fine since.

I've been awol and I know that I've missed responding to posts, I would go to respond and then had to go do something and just haven't been able to keep up...travel really confuses things and the posts became lost in the shuffle. So please forgive me if I've missed answering something! I will try to figure out where I left off...I didn't even have time to bookmark anything!
