Sorry I was off byc so long, Clover layed a big egg, got a prolapse that was impossible to fix, and at 1:00 am Monday, I decided I needed to euthanize her.
Oh no. I am so sorry to hear that. It is very hard when something like this happens. I lost my Trisha in the same way. :hugs :hugs

We are glad to have you back.

It was REALLY bad. I tried to fix it for nearly 2 weeks with no improvement.
No one can fault you for not trying and no one here ever would. You did your best for her. You need to rest easy knowing that and allow yourself some room to grieve. :hugs :hugs

Piscia has lost several of her larger tail feathers.

She doesn't seem to be getting pecked, is eating and pooping fine, and I'm not seeing any evidence of mites or anything.

Has anyone had (or heard of) a ~12 wk old chicken experience a very young tail specific molt?

I've attached a pic from today with her tail circled and one from 4 days ago when it was fuller.

She's coping better than I am!
She still likes her carry in the morning. I haven't had to put her on a roost bar in the evening for some time now. She's eating well. Gets around with the rest when she wants to. She does still need a bit of help with keeping her bum cleanish. She certainly doesn't look like she has any intention of dying at the moment. Even her poop is more than adequate and normal looking.
This is excellent news. I am very pleased to hear it. I an guessing how this is hard on you and for that reason, I am sending you some hugs. :hugs :hugs :hugs

I think the knocking the corn out of your hand has more to do with her showing she is the provider rather than not being good enough to eat from your hand. The roosters here do something similar. While the food is in my hand the roosters will take their bit and the hens will wait their trun with a bit of pushing and shoving.
If I put the food on the ground in front of the roosters then they do the I've found food actions and calls. Interesting that they distinguish between the two. On the ground is found food; out of my hand is given food. They don't try to take credit for given food. They will bring their hens to me and ask me to give them food and then they stand back when I do.
This is what I love about having you as a part of the thread. This would have never occurred to me. I knew it had to mean something but I could only guess based upon my human biases. Thanks so much for the insights.

We had a wonderful moment today where I tossed a handful of mealy worms on the deck and Lilly made the rooster I found food call and called everyone over. She was really momma hen at that moment. 🥰
