Somehow I knew that she was going to lay. Rime was chatting more than usual, even for her. Her comb was super bright too.
And then ...

I expected blue. It's an olive green with a scattering of brown speckles.

Weirdly enough it changes colors when dry. I wonder if that's the bloom?

Here is a comparison to Shirina's.

An interesting note: the comb goes pale just after laying an egg.

Apart from movement, you are looking for encrustations on the feather shaft that look a bit like the stuff on the leg scales when a chicken has scaly leg mite.
Thanks. I am pretty sure I know what to look for. I also have photos. I can tape test microscopic if I need to.

This is just proof of how we forget the "normal" things. While I was considering everything feather mites never occurred to me. Thanks so much for reminding me of a basic possible cause.

It's just that some of the allotment crew have feather mites and a couple of them have that frayed feather look.

So it was top of your mind then. Funny how that happens. I know I still owe you my thoughts on your products. I am working on it right now.

Yay! Congratulations! What an amazing capture and what a beautiful egg (okay - 2 eggs...no slight intended, Shirina)

I thought the shorter days would slow my girls down.
And happily, we have had several 3 egg days instead of 7.

Yet, still many 7 egg days.

Today at 730a, I found this in one of the boxes.

And evidence of a soft egg that had been devoured (drips of yolk on the poop board).

I was really hoping these poor girls would catch a break and be able to grow into full adulthood with a nice winter break. I feel bad for their poor little bodies trying to produce eggs when they should just be growing, studying and calling/texting their special friends.

My girls are always on the computer. :barnie 8EEA3B54-A9EC-44CC-B988-EA51DA4AC2E6.jpeg
