The "fugly stage" is one of my absolute favorite stages.
Here is little Corona surrounded by her brothers.

And here is the 2nd group of chicks I hatched out in the incubator last year. 6 hatched, all 6 boys, I should have saw that as a sign of things to come.

I love the first shot of Phyllis! I would think it counter-intuitive...but they cock their tail the same way as their head. I can sometimes predict which way they will go (when trying to corner them for something that can't wait until dark) by which way their tail turns...that is the way they are going next!!!!
That's funny because Hattie does it the other way. She steers like the rudder on a ship. Tail left, head goes right. 😆
