More Pecking Order Observations

I've been spending time with my granddaughter this weekend so all my observations have been via cameras. On Friday Lilly was roosted in her typical spot with all her friends.

The Littles have positioned themselves directly in front of the fan in the window. This is typical for weeks now.

Last night some one took the best roosting spot from Lilly......

That's right, Hattie took prime spot on the roost last night. I wish I had seen how that happened. I bet Lilly was not happy about that.

I can Fly! I can Fly!

I was commenting to my wife last night that it looks like Maleficent has grown tail feathers since we last saw her. I am sure this has been going on for some time but you know what it is like, the changes are more dramatic when you don't see them everyday. Aurora does not seem to have them yet.

I was picking on the Littles a couple of weeks ago calling them "flat-backs" because they had no tails. I always joke that chickens are easy to draw. They are either a "U" or a "triangle". As they work the yard in sillhouette, scatching = U, pecking to see what they dug up = triangle. I was calling the Littles as "L's" and "acute triangles".

Well check out the gorgeous tail feathers that my Maleficent has grown. :love

They, apparently as well as being beautiful, have assisted her in the ability to Fly! She demonstrated that ability this morning by flying 25 feet (7.3 meters) in the air to a deck box 2 feet (0.6 meters) high.
Here she is after she has landed and was preparing to jump to my deck. The line represents her path of flight. I was so shocked I did not get a picture of her in the air. Really, I was stunned. For a big girl, she is not much smaller than Hattie, that was some flight. Really reminded me of my leghorns.

My California Whites can really get flying!! They can fly from the snack area to the creek in one trip, it's easily over 50 feet in length. They aren't very high, but they can go long.

My Barred Rock cockerel, Stanley, was trying to follow suite, he has a thing for them, and he didn't make it a third of the distance before he came crashing down!

It's Too Hot, Too Hot Baby

I was in the house today watching girls ot the window when my wife came home with groceries. I went to help her bring then in and the next thing I know the flock is at the bank for squawking their heads off. I dash to the back door and only see 3 hens.

Aurora is missing.

I start to scan the yard as Maleficent runs toward the pool. As I follow her with my eyes, this is what I see.

Aurora decided to cool herself off in the pool today.

I scoop her out and grab a towel because she is shaking.

The others surround me bawking and looking up at her.

She takes a short nap and then wants down. She dries herself for a while and then she starts to shake again and lowers her butt and stands like a penguin, shaking.

I start to panic. Is she going into shock? Maybe I should put her back in the towel to keep her warm. I am getting up to gather her when this pops out of her.

Maleficent and Lilly attack intending to eat the egg. I scoop it up and take it in to show the wife.

Crazy, just a crazy few minutes. I guess I'll put out more oyster shell.
