Not only did I share it with Mrs BY Bob she agreed that I know nothing of woman's motives. Like you, Mrs BY Bob made it clear that Sydney had perfectly good reasons for what she was doing and it was my own fault for not understanding them.

All I can say is that you are all correct. I have no idea and it's my fault.

When the girls are free ranging they will often take a break and perch on the pergola bench.

I tried to get a "family" photo but Alice decided she didn't want her photo taken.
Kids these days!
The branch that Edwina is perched on will be the basis for my new sleeping coop if I ever get around to building it.

Day 4: Almost There

With a plus or minus 48 hours factored in, the hatch could be tomorrow. It is hard to believe. Sidney came off the nest at 12:02, it was only 67.3°F (19.6°C) in the coop. She stayed off about 50 min and wound up in a different nest box again because Hattie was in hers.

Aurora finished before Sydney went back in. Hattie then moved to her favorite box but Sydney did not move back.

I did not wait long today, it is too chilly. So I moved Sydney to the correct box.

Here is our future Mom, provided I can keep her on the correct eggs, taking a bath today!

Slow-motion

I was playing around with the slow-motion camera the other day and got two interesting videos.

That Kernal
This first video shows Sansa turning her head to select a specific kernel of corn. As quickly as they peck I'm not really sure if knew they turned their head like this. And those quivering wattles just make me giggle.

The Swipe
I have mentioned this behaviour before. I still don't understand why they do this. Depending on the age of the hen and hence the sharpness of the beak, it can hurt a little. Aurora's is exceptionally sharp.

In the first video I think you're seeing binocular vision at work.

The Downside of too Much Free Range Time

Strange nesting locations. This whole nest box egg laying saga just continues on. Check out the new nest Lilly was trying to make today.

Of course you can't really tell where that is from the video. Here is the actual Location.

Right behind Sansa on the roof of my pool shed! I have never had hens do this before. This lot is being spoiled with too much free range time. They are going wild on me!

I just caught up on all the fluffy butts of the last few days! So Barred Rocks are known for going broody, huh? Oh oh!

I went to Tractor Supply and got some pullets (left) since I didn't think the hatch of five was going to quite do it for our family of four. They only had Barred Rocks, Cornish Cross, and Production Reds as choices.
