Ah, I feel for you! Maybe a netting over everything to make a temporary run and keep the nasty hawk out - across the coop and over to the tall corner fence, and on the other side on some posts by the shorter fence? Alternatively, one of those pre-fab mosquito patio tents?

I can't do that. I need to keep them from meeting the other chickens. I need a buffer zone between them and the others. I am essentially out of room with what I have set up now. The fence is to keep the big girls out not the little ones in.

I wasn't clear on where the pullets came from, I assumed a chicken-keeper somewhere. So there is no quarantine needed for pullets from a flock held at a reputable hatchery?

It does not matter where you get chickens from, the right thing to do is quarantine them. Chickens are so good at hiding illness you just never know. So you need to give them enough time to get ill before you mix them.

My evening news: da da da da da da da da…. I had Hen-Rietta (the Leghorn) in for a while. I didn’t think it would be possible, but she came in tamely on my arm. I produced the best treats I had, she jumped up on Xzit’s box and there was some drama, but I stopped it. I medicated Hen-Rietta, (she let me do so) then I took her back outside. She ran/flew straight back to the coop, where Jaffar was waiting for her. She’s so soft and snuggling when she’s apart from the tribe. And as my best prolific laying hen, she deserves the best I can give! I love that Leghorn!

Property for sale, Central Valley California. 2,5 acres, only 26K ? Near me Plus remaining property taxes.

Coop Raising

On Saturday I went to help @CrazyChookChookLady set up a new coop and run for Ned and his ladies. It was great to see him again and watch him manage his tribe. He really is an amazing lad.

They are planning to extend a second run out the back of the coop as well.

I wore the same hat that he had roosted on the day I left him with her but he clearly did not recognize me. He kept his ladies away from me and kept himself between me and them at all times. I'm glad he is such a good rooster but, as unrealistic as it was, I was a little sad he did not remember me.

The smaller roster next to him in photo #3 and alone with the ladies in photo #4 is his son Cappy. You can see how much smaller than Ned he is. Ned is a very large fellow much like his Dad, Stanley.

@Shadrach I know you don't read this thread anymore but I thought you would like this update.

Oh my gosh!!! Ned is gorgeous! Thank you for this wonderful post. It looks like Ned is having a fabulous life!!!

I've run out of back yard. I'm only on 1/3 of an acre with a front yard, house, and pool there is not much left.
