Let me stand corrected. Momma Hen is not just laying eggs in her little cave, the devil is full on broody and setting. I saw she came off for about a hour then went back. I waited until after dark and got out my good flashlight and went to see. She is on her nest. I can cry right now. I cannot get to her to remove the eggs. I do not know how long she has been laying nor how many she is setting on. I also do not know if today is even day 1. I feel this is karma biting me in the butt for teasing @Ponypoor . Lesson learned folks. Do not laugh at someone and say they are going to wide up with a sneaky broody hen when they do not want chicks. YOU will be the one with the sneaky broody hen.

Um, @RebeccaBoyd , why are you surprised and/or blaming it on karma. You have how many sneaky broody time bombs...and you are surprised that when you aren't counting them and checking on them daily - instead relying on others to do this for you - that one gets missed and goes broody??? Especially near perpetual broody Momma hen??

I cannot physically do a 6 hour drive right now. The 15 minute drive to the dr yesterday was bad enough. I'm also supposed to not be out and about exposing myself to illness while I heal. I guess I will just have to wait until I find leghorn chicks at TSC or Rural king and raise them myself. That is not the end of the world. I love raising chicks.

I’ll let you slide this time, because you need to heal yourself. But you do need some leghorns also. ( You won’t be disappointed with leghorns)

No, chicken math at it's best would mean she would get at least 6 chickens, so only 1 hour of driving for each. Me thinks 3 leghorns and 3legbars. Nice even split!

However, you could go with 4 leggies and 2 legbars. That way you will be sure to 'fill' Grandma's egg carton quickly, so she might be less likely to question how the egg carton never gets emptier....put one full dozen in at a time...just hide the others for a few days until you have enough for another carton full (and start saving those store bought cartons - NOW.) And, nice to have two blue egg layers...they won't each lay every day...and it IS a beautiful addition: rainbow eggs: Blue, white, light brown, dark brown, brown with speckles.
moral of this part: 1 is never enough! 3 is good, but 6 is better

To be honest am I shocked I have a broody when I cannot be constantly out to gather the eggs, NO. What is surprising is I did not even know that hen was laying. I am also shocked that she chose the hillside to begin laying. The hillside is her last resort when I bust her up in her usual spots. All I can do now is pray. Pray she does not freeze and pray that she is hidden enough from predators. If she is successful then I have to hold my breath and pray she gets them off the hill safely.
