5F here and the auto door didn’t close. Also couldn’t see everyone in the coop for a headcount with the camera. Counted just three. Didn’t see anybody in the runs though. Went out to check, lifted the tarp over the auto door control box and the tarp is brittle, it crackled and split in a few places like a potato chip. Darn. Going to need a new tarp, it is three years old now. The AutoDoor box is saying it’s blocked by something. I did clean the threshold this morning, maybe some water has iced up on it. Luckily the manual outer pop door is good and the handle & vertical dowel nicely protected by the tarp. That door worked well, so will look into the other problem in the morning.

Opened the back to count everyone. Someone is crammed into the very back of the nest box, really hunkered down into the hemp, with someone crammed up against them. Peanut is on the roost side, on the heating pad, with Hazel most likely. On camera they were also trying to hunker up against the back wall. So I put the heating pad up to Medium. Will check again on them later.

Managed to get a few more fluffy butts...

The Buckeyes are looking more peaceful now, somebody’s still in the nest box but three are now on the warm pad, snuggled and sleeping.

Hello everyone ! Friday already. I apologize I haven't posted pictures this week again. I've kept up with the thread, but like every year at Christmas I'm feeling a bit down (except last year when I had COVID 🤣). I dread the holiday and the whole Christmas thing especially in my partner's family, and I feel guilty about it because I have no reason to, apart from being a grumpy, getting old chicken bat !
Anyway I'm wishing (early because I probably won't be posting this weekend) a happy holiday for those of you who celebrate and enjoy it, and if some of you feel like me, remember we're not alone 💚.

And I will especially be thinking of those of you who have health issues still. I guess health is a blessing that is only understood once you don't have it anymore. Reading how you all are so brave dealing with pain makes me realize I should whine a little less and take more joy from being pain free!

I have some "Marylin styles " butts from this morning, thanks to the warm wind we are having. I know some of you are experiencing abnormally cold temps, ours have been abnormally warm for a few days and going up still, just like last year at the end of December. I'm eating outside in short sleeves now! Hoping all chooks in the cold make it all right especially Mama Hen!

Thanks for the gorgeous pictures. I completely understand the stressful holiday situation. I am lucky that we are going nowhere and we also have no guests. This holiday season will be
  • catch up with work
  • lots of cooking
  • house cleaning and organizing
  • boardgames and shows
Today I pressured canned squash, in addition to winterize my garden. Like everyone else, there will be a significant temperature drop tonight (about 40F). We brought Light inside since her feathers are so messed up.

The low is going to be 18F (no laughing, very cold for us). You think chickens will be OK outside? They are in a small coop (around 4'X5'), no draft, no heat.

Hang in there. Forced family fun will soon be over. Picture #2 is a FANTASTIC Marilyn fluffy butt!

I don't know if I will get any pictures today - the storm is just reaching me now - we are dropping from 60F to 6F in just a few hours (15C to -14C) and the wind is picking up. Lots of storm warnings because of expected 60MPH (96K/hr) winds. I need to secure stuff outside as best I can.
I have decided I will bring the Princesses into the mud room or the garage in the night. It is less about the absolute temperature (though that is pretty cold, but more about the sudden drop and Diana still being only partly clothed).
Both areas stay very cold and indeed I will need to put a heater on in both to prevent pipes from freezing. Having the chickens co-located with the at-risk pipe will be one less thing for me to worry about and they will be asleep anyway so it should be OK.
Hope I keep power.
My one worry about the plan is I have not tried to handle Bernadette and I worry she will freak out on me even in the dark. She is a big bird and if she freaks out it will be hard to contain her.

Wish me luck everyone. And everyone stay safe in whatever crazy weather you are contending with.
Good decision bringing them in the garage. Hopefully Bernie made it easy for you.
