Wow the baby chicks are heavy just moved them to the coop outside for the night. They can wake up with the rest of the flock. My legs and back are so week. Thank gawd hubby is here to help.

Momma Hen gets called many names, several I cannot say on here depending on the day. She is most often referred to as Momma Hen or the "Ole Bat". Her actual name is Chicken. Yup, you heard me right, Momma Hens name is Chicken. Rosie named her years ago when she was really into the How to Train your Dragons phase. On one of the snin-off series her favorite character Tuffnut had a pet chicken named Chicken. When Rosie tamed Momma she got the honor of naming her. I should never have let her do it, I knew better.

In the future, if necessary, you can do 1 of two things (or both)
1) GENTLY file with a nail file. only a little bit at a time. This will help smooth it and potentially keep it from splitting further if it is broken unevenly.
2) If it is also cracked, use a bit of superglue on the outside to keep it from splitting further ( it is painful if it splits up into the quick) When doing this, I suggest using a gel super glue as it is easier to control, and be sure to get it only n the beak. Using something to apply it with might be better than squeezing directly onto it, as if she squirms, in your efforts to keep her still, you might squeeze the bottle harder.

There is a 3rd option if they break the beak completely off so can't really eat - and that is make a prosthetic beak, but you would definitely need help attaching it will super glue...and you have to be very careful that you don't get super glue on any exposed quick - so not for the feint of heart.

I put a tiny drop of gel first on my finger and swiped the top of Hazel's beak that way. It made a thin smooth gloss and perfectly filled in the crack. I had gently filed a little bit first, so she was somewhat conditioned to getting touched there. She did not like the superglue at all, I believe it was the curing fumes, though some may have gotten in through the crack. That quickly faded and I blew gently from behind her to try to keep any fumes away from her nares. It worked really well.

What is her build like? That’s an impressive comb… Definitely seems leghorn-ish to me. Could she be a mix?

I have a large area of my coop that is partly fenced. The whole front area has no protection around it. I could put a little bit of chicken wire up and let them out. I have an open air coop, so they just have a wooden box that my dad made. It's a large box though, and it is raised. It was supposed to be a nesting box, but they lay on the ground in two nests that they made under it. They love making things hard for me! We are going to be working on the coop so that we can let them out AND get more birds!!! I don't know where they sleep. We just got them as eggs before we had an area for them. Oh the Joy's of having an Agriculture teacher who gives you free eggs to hatch out!! They don't have a roosting bar. I have been wanting to put one in for ages, but my dad is always too busy. I don't know why don't put one in myself. Where we live we have a ton of predators. Bobcats, foxes, coyotes, coons, birds, and my guineas if they got into a fight. I have had a few hawk attacks on my guineas, but luckily no one was killed. Just a scratch or two on a few guineas.

I asked my dad to show me how to make things reverse psychology haha. He showed me how to use all sorts of tools as a youngster (it helped that he had no sons so my sister and I had to learn things!). So I learnt how to build a boat, put an addition on the house, roofing, fencing….

My mum tried to show me how to knit (@Grandma The Chicken can knit!), but I never had the patience for it! Building a boat was more fun!

I suggest maybe asking your dad to show you how to build things then the two of you can work on things together!

Update on my Colorado trip: I have been quite busy with my friend and his horse ranch in Loveland. And I met a nice lady (I think I was set up, but so what!) seems I have a lot of BYC catching up to do. It’s crazy how the weather here is actually not so bad. I will be heading home tomorrow.

I hope you have some horse photos!

I have plastic over most of the windward facing portions of the coop run complex but not on the potion directly under the house. If Glynda caught the wind that was where it happened. I could line that portion with shower curtains as well.

I do need to think on this further but this is where I find my thoughts today. If I am going to add ventilation to the Cluckle Hut I need to do it soon while it is warm out and before the next cold snap.

The easiest solution to all of this is to lock them down next time and not let any of them out of the big coop. No matter what I think that was my big error. Poor Glynda is paying for it right now.

I am way behind, I hope she is doing okay so far and hasn't lots those tips. I hope to read further if you've made changes and what they are, that may answer my questions so I'll wait. Try to remind yourself: she is alive and not disabled, not even horribly injured, and I think that is the bottom line in all things Chicken.
