Ah! Other way around from the grackles: black head, brownish body. That may be why the unofficial name gets used!
I know I shouldn't like them - but they are so funny hopping around the horses - they eat the bugs that they stir up in the grass. The males are so territorial - you think Roos are bad for fighting? those little beasts are nuts! They fight like crazy! Then once all the breeding season is done they all get along fine - crazy birds!

FYI - just looking at Cowbirds VS Grackles and there is a Bronzed Cowbird that looks just like a Grackle!

These are the Cowbirds I have:

I tried moving Sydney and she went crazy trying to get back to her nest. It was awful. I had to let her go back to the original spot.
Oh dear - poor gal! As long as it's a safe spot I am good with it.

With Henny Penny I wanted her off the ground in the middle box - she was good with it. Of course Curly was broody at the same time, so I let her stay in the bottom nest box (just in case Henny decided to bail on me - I had a back up!).

And with Dorothy the others kept laying eggs in with her (enablers!) and I didn't want to accidentally 'miss' an egg or 6... :) For some reason whenever I moved her the others wanted to lay in her nest box sheesh! I finally put her in the crate and closed the door - problem solved...

Because we have been talking about other kinds of birds, I would like to bring up “SnowBirds” . These types of birds come in many different shapes and sizes and colors. They are usually found in trailer parks or camping areas. They migrate to the warmer campgrounds in winter, and cooler weather spots in the heat of the summer. They spend a lot of money having a bigger and better rig that their neighbors!

Hopefully that solves the egg eating !!

I just saw that 🤣 I guess I had not looked at enough pages, and so I had not seen it... well, too late now! I just saw the first post of him...
But those were great photos! Good for you! I am surprised your chickens didn't kill it and eat it!

Here is my Snowbird Nest (until I sold it back to mum - and then she sold it from under me!).
It was a very modest nest for the snow-birds... but comfy non-the-less :)
