Best to keep them contained when not home, I do this but then I am paranoid about predators.

I confess to being rather intimidated by Bernie at the best of times. If she starts going broody I will be very scared.

Being scared will only encourage her to be fierce! They read your emotions like a book, i tell 'ya!. You need to be large and in charge if she goes broody (but also, as you always are, understanding)
