Final Day of Access

Today was the last day for everyone to have access to the worms in the garden. They took advantage of it.

My chickens are banned from my garden. Josey ate a whole fennel plant. *sigh*

I do not need grey hairs from chickens, that is Rosie's job now that she is a teenager. The newest installment of the leghorn drama is 1 of them has chose a new roosting location. She has decided the perfect place to sleep is in Holly's spot beside Twig. Right now, it is vacant as Holly is rearing chicks. Twig loves this as he has a girl on each side of him. Grackle also sleeps on that roost, but she learned fast if she wanted to stay she needed Twig between her and Holly. She also is showing off as she can fly straight up, none of the others can. I really hate to break it to her, but once Holly is done with her chicks she will reclaim her spot. When that day comes it will not be pretty, Holly can be viscous and put Aurora to shame over who roosts beside her.
I'm not sure this hen has any shame at all. But Holly is free to try.

I made the mistake of planting cactus in the garden.

Insert swear words here….

I look at that garden each morning and tell myself I have to weed in there - it’s now a jungle of cactus and foot high grass, I think I will just dig it all up and burn it.

I swear those cacti can throw needles at me when I weed!
Some are edible...

Yes but just because it out and about so much, Mr P hasn’t even looked sideways at Rico, who walks right by him no problems. And he is crowing.

So I don’t think it’s an ‘another male’ thing. I think the chick got separated from the broodies and the others were milling about and he pecked the chick. For whatever reason, maybe to just send it on its way… who knows.

On the up side they are learning to run away from the others and that is a good thing.

But if Mr P is going to be aggressive with another Roo here that would be a bad thing.
There is no way to know how he is going to respond to another male until you have one. I would be surprised if he did it to hurt the chick. I'm guessing it was to move the chick along. Although it could be an initial reminder of who his better is. It still don't think he meant to hurt the chick. That would really surprise me.

I think it is time I look back in my photo's to see the exact date I got the leghorns. One of them just came out of a porch box cackling like she laid a egg. No egg, but she is practicing already.
They do start laying early. What do the combs look like?
