It's past my bed time, but the power's out and I have a brooder heat plate going. So we cranked up the generator just for the itty bitties. Estimated restoration is 1:30 am. I keep looking out the window to see if my neighbor's porch light is on. Then I can shut off the genny and go to bed.

4 hours to go...

I might have posted that already. It's cute enough to post again, isn't it?

I hope your power is restored soon. That’s a nerve wracking feeling.

Beautiful hen. Was she a leghorn? Her tail is not like a leghorn, but I rank myself with @RoyalChick here in expertise, she’s definitely a pretty chicken!

I think it’s very difficult to really know what’s going on internally. Much less put a cause or causes to laying problems and a subsequent egg yolk peritonitis. Leghorns and other high production layer breeds have more laying problems than other breeds, don’t they? Another chicken, even a good layer chicken, might go through all what you describe and be okay. You just can’t know.

So I don’t think it’s reasonable to blame yourself here, if that’s what you’re inclined to do. Your deep grief is not reason to find blame. This illness happens, and you did help her greatly by preventing further pain and suffering. I’m so sorry. :hugs :hugs
I'm not sure if she was a leghorn. Probably some kind of mutt. She was white but laid brown eggs. Dark egg layer crossed with white leghorn?

Apparently it is supposed to warm up next week into the 80s, all this extreme swings in the temperatures is driving me bonkers!

But…. It will be nice for the new arrivals to get out and about and learn The Way of the Chicken.

How many do I have now?
13+3+4+10= too many!

Who’s idea was it to hatch eggs anyways? Who are the enablers on here who I need to send some chicks to?

That is just a ridiculously outrageous number 😳
 I may be one of those enablers. I don't have any silkies at all (this probably needs to be corrected) you can send a few of those this way ❤️

2nd storm today

Cuckoo is still up. Everyone else has gone to bed.

Tax: they're coming back together

And surprisingly no one used the French lilac (by the deck) as a hangout today. Too wet? To many worms to dig? Dunno, but they stuck closer together.
