Dear Lhicken

Lhicken has suddenly taken a turn for the worse. She got real lethargic, is only pooping water, and not breathing well. Not eating anything. I've ruled out lice, mites, coccidiosis, egg yolk peronitis (was that even a question? But I seem to be having it a lot), and any of the three crop disorders.

I am several days behind, so not going to try to comment on everything right now. Just wanted to say hello and that the chooks and I are both doing pretty well. Trying to prepare for the super-hot days coming up starting late this week (100+F).

I did get a little chicken time on Saturday. Scarlett sat on the back of my chair. I couldn’t smile when I took a selfie because she kept trying to peck my teeth.

And a few slightly late Monday Mugs (it is 12:15 am here).

Speedy has heard that ruffled combs and big wattles are in style so she is working on hers.

They stayed up there last night. I went back out at almost full dark and moved them down. Last year, Jessica was up roosting with Lark and Indigo tucked under her pretty early. Went back through my photos. Took this may 15, 2022. Hatching was may 2-5 ish.View attachment 3539673Approximately 10-12 days old. Wow, I hadn't realized how close this lot is to that timeline.

I remember how cool I thought that was.

I did too. Seeing them peer out from under her bloomers.... finding these littles up on the roost in a cuddle pile (again) made more sense when I checked the timeline. Even without mama raising them, they seen pretty close to the same development....except for exploring the world.

They're still far in advance of babies being raised in the house. The weather hasn't been helpful in letting them outside. The daily (some days multiple times) dowsing as the rains come through (everything from mist/drizzle to torrential gully washers) is quite the contrast to last summer's dry dry dry.

I really like raising them in the coop from day 1. Zero pasty bums, adults calm and teaching from the beginning, all staying fairly close to the coop to swap out babysitter duties. I put the tote in the coop a week before the babies came home, giving them time to decide it was fine.

We'll see how well the babies did up there in another hour when I go open the coop.
