She certainly was special. From the way she flew to the sky, how she turned her broodiness into caring for those little ones, and her beautiful ever changing colors. We will all miss this little bat-hen, I feel very sad that she's gone, and very sad for you as well.

"Someone I loved once gave me
a box full of darkness.
It took me years to understand
that this, too, was a gift."
Mary Oliver.

I may need chains to hold me inside today so I am not being a helicopter parent. Today is Raven's and the chicks first full day of free ranging. The chicks are older then I planned but weather is finally cooperating and it is supposed to be beautiful. I now need to let go and trust that Raven has this...and she does. I let them all loose at the sawdust pile, hovered for 10 minutes while the coffee brewed and watched the little sussex's demolish some worms I uncovered. When I came in they had made it about 5 feet to the back corner of the building. That first cup of coffee is gone and I feel the urge to go check on them.

Old stand by:
Fried egg easy over, on toast, and some cocoa

Seems you have the coco 💕
Coco isn’t much good for much this morning. All she wants to do, is snuggle up with me and purr (and pretend she’s chewing bubble gum) :love She’s so sweet! She’s a good coconut 🥥!

Look Aurora, little Owly is somehow finding spicy food daily to make sure that little beard of hers continues to grow well. I should not call her little though, she is the biggest of all the chicks.

Lawn chair and hat and sunglasses 😊

And you can call it chillaxing with the chooks like I do - no helicopter mum here at all!

The stray animals here aren’t very smart. I saved a duckling from next door, was being carried away by a cat.
1. I shouldn’t have so many stray birds from next door
2. I shouldn’t have so many stray cats in my yard either’
The County doesn’t do anything about strays anymore.
I saved the duckling this time, but I fear that the cats will get a meal one way or the other!
I’m perplexed, bewildered, in a conundrum,( enigma) if you prefer!
