The craziest thing just happened... I came in with 5 chicken eggs that I stole from Willow, because she couldn't fit all of them. I decided to candle them. Out of the 5, 2 were fertile and developing, so I ran them back out and gave them back to her. She took them and stuffed them under. I'm going to take more and try and get most of them so that I can get rid of any non developing eggs.
My dad also said that he has no say in what "the bird ladies do" -thats my mom and I- and so now I think I get to keep them, just no roosters.
What just happened???

And many thanks for the info on the Dynatrap - it says it does not attract bees. Although the statement it doesn't attract pollinators generally is a bit dodgy as many of those other things to do play a role in pollination - but happy to see bees and at least some other pollinators are safe. I may indeed get one and see if it helps this season.

I can fathom 117F. Once we went somewhere on the hottest day of the year without knowing it (around 115F). The car shut off when we backed out of the parking spot. It did turn back on. And, to top it all off, dinner was hot and ready pizza.

What ever she wants that is what. Today it is relaxing in the shade posing for the camera and taking well earned naps. Do not let that relaxed look fool you though. A glimpse of the raisin box and she will spring into action and throw her weight around to get her share.....and the other's share. Butter does not mess around when Raisins are on the menu.

Love it when they run/hop/fly all at once!

That seems pretty early for her to abandon them - they aren't even fully feathered out yet! Please remind me, how many weeks are they? Mine are just at about 3.5 weeks and, while they have a bit of baby fuzz here and there - they are essentially feathered out and could handle nights on their own - especially if they sniggled together. That said, Orps do tend to grow slower - and these are 'mutts'.

They will all be beautiful - I can't wait to see what the boys look like when they are fully feathered out!

They are actually 6 weeks old today. They have been extremely slow to feather out but they are also quite large and round. I am very glad I have them on 20% all flock, I think they really need the extra protein.

They are just very different birds altogether tbh. They are active eat a ton, drink plenty of water, and seem completely healthy but by in large they do not dart around like maniacs on caffeine like my first bunch.

They are content to lay down in the run together and observe the world. Laid back would be the best way I could describe them which is not what one would expect from 6 week old chicks.

I am looking forward to seeing how they mature and feather out. I am also intrigued as to how the Roos will act given their general mellow personalities. Lore is already showing some beetle black iridescent hackle and tail feathers.

I too am dealing with brats. It has taken me an hour to get them all back into the Chicken Palace. They don't need to go to bed - just into the runs so I can close the door and go in myself before I am completely eaten by the mosquitoes.
Bernie and Babs are reasonably easy to get to come in even if they have wandered far away because they hear the rattle of the tin cup and know there are sunflower seeds to be had.
But the littles. Oh dear oh dear.
One comes in and two go out. Two come in and three go out. Aaargh!
I realize now how much Eli was helping me in the evening by calling them in.
I need a tennis racquet or a rake to herd them.
I finally got them all in (or so I thought) and was leaving to go inside when I spot Piglet far outside the electric fence.
She has discovered where I was moving some rocks earlier and there were lots of woodlice/pill bugs. No tin cup was going to disturb that feast.
I try shooing her - but how do I get her in without losing others?
What a nightmare!
Everyone is in now. At least I think so. And I am ready for a very stiff drink and my bed. I really need to think about how to handle this better without Eli.
Maybe an early evening routine of mash for supper so they all get used to coming in a bit earlier.

She nearly gave me a heart attack this evening, but she is cute!

Ha! I have this problem too. I am sure if anyone was watching me try and get 9 pullets and 5 tweens back into the run they would die laughing but it is exhausting. My kids “help” too which mostly just adds to the chaos. Its crazy!!

They do love it! Hattie looks like she is sipping fine wine.

They are adorable. They may still hang around Brownie for a little bit longer. Mine tend to still spend time with their mothers for a week or so once they start laying again. I am following how these guys feather out. I would assume the speckled sussex will follow a similar pattern. Then again they have entirely different chick down colors so I could be completely wrong on this.

I am watching yours too! I am curious about the similarities and differences in the two.

She is a gorgeous girl! Bet if this heat wave really hits you area, she will take to sleeping in the wave-edge of the creek!
