Passing the buck are you???
Never Punk your chickens !Martina has eyes!
I love the full headdress look on her but this look is for her own good. I guess she is a punk rocker now, time to change up what music you play for her. She needs to be initiated to the 80s rock. Blast some Def Leppard, Guns n Roses and ACDC in the barn now while you do chores. I still think pullet, wattle starting on chick that is around 8 weeks no longer bother me. With breeds that are supposed to have them, hens included.
Hmmm, either they are slackers....or they need reinforcements, then! (I strongly suspect the latter, @BY Bob )Grass Seeds
It is there job to keep the grass cut after all.
Tore something in my hip, I crouched down to pick up a screw on the floor and it gave way…The inspection crew is at it again, this time I made sure to measure twice and cut once

Okay, so a poop hammock is VERY doable there! I assume your rafters are 2' on center (looks wider than 16",though I could be wrong.)Nest is there top centre, poop pile I have on the go is that pile of shavings just behind the Tween.
If they had nested up over top of the light panels it would have been ‘cleaner’
I have been sweeping poops from the chickens into a pile under the nest and that seems to be working, the chickens are pretty good about not digging in the crud.
I usually have a whole row of swallow nests down the centre of the barn

They sure are!Tourists are drop Bear’s choice of targets!
You’ll wish you had when a drop-bear lands on top of you!I am not spreading vegemite behind my ears though!![]()
I fell for their need for grass seeds also and didn’t mow the run, I guess I can live with sipping wet feet in the mornings….Grass Seeds
I have let the grass get a little long and the ladies are enjoying the seeds. It is there job to keep the grass cut after all.

well we can’t let the Fates think we want all pullets now can we??? Look at me… I want one little Roo and what did I get ??? All girls! What are you doing, no roos no. I already promised mom no more silkie roos. Pullets people, I need pullets. I am going to ask her advice. I have a empty incubator. I also have a very stubborn broody hen who is just waiting for me to give up trying to break her and let her have eggs. I could relent, give Perdita a store egg tonight and stop all attempts to break her and give her the eggs 24 or 48 hours after they arrive. Decisions, Decisions.
I would hatch in the bator, then put under Perdita if she is still broody. Best of both worlds.Any other time it would be Perdita no hesitation. This time it is different. First time with shipped eggs and a unproven broody. The unproven part also would normally not bother me. What I am torn about is these are silkie eggs. The much desired and coveted black silkie eggs. If they all arrive unbroken I am only getting 6. I really do not know what to do here. I want them broody raised and I have a broody hen waiting on eggs. I also want a black silkie pullet and this is my one shot at it this year.
don’t worry he’s getting them ! Come on Syd hurry up!Hmmm, either they are slackers....or they need reinforcements, then! (I strongly suspect the latter, @BY Bob )
Nope, not a lick of enabling here!![]()
I was just standing near the nest looked up, one of the chicks stood, turned and pooped on ver the edge of the nestOkay, so a poop hammock is VERY doable there! I assume your rafters are 2' on center (looks wider than 16",though I could be wrong.)
Take an old pillow case & open it up ( the long way - cut down the long sides so it is a very long, somewhat narrow sheet of cloth.)
Staple one end to the rafter their nest is against, let it hand low, and staple the other end to the next rafter. As long as it is high enough so the droop doesn't affect you or the horses, use the whole length. Otherwise, tack a few inches into either end at each rafter to lessen the droop. I am sure you like to watch the comings and goings - so to not completely obscure the nest from your view, have one side edge close to the nest (like 2-3" beyond, so when momma cleans out the droppings, they still land on the poop hammock (thank you for the correct term, RC!) - but not overlapping so much that you can't see the nest from that side. Win-win!
