The middle picture is a Barnevelder, correct? She looks just like Willow.
No, the middle one is a Dark Cornish. They have very similar markings to a Partridge coloring (like a partridge rock, for example), but have a black to mostly black head/upper neck, and black on wings instead of solid brown on those spots.

Ok everyone, they are almost 5 weeks now. Owly is a Americauna or fancy word for Easter Egger. There was some suspicion a week and a half ago about her being a boy. She does not act it and I cannot see any boy traits on her yet. She is my favorite, willingly seeks me out to sit on me so that probably does mean she is a male but there is hope. What do you all think.

So far, looking good for pullet.

I'm going to go out on a limb here...and guess it ISN'Y Jessica - because that would be too obvious.

So, I will go with either Maizie or Primula.

I'd love to say Silver is too old to go broody for the first time - but Crop Girl has gone broody (sitting a week now), and she is 5. Never a hint of broody tendencies before! So, honestly, it really could be anyone.
Oh, Jessica is broody. Just not out in the "wilds". She's safely in the coop.

Hmmm, what do I think?

I think SHE is just gorgeous! :D

Seriously, for a pea type comb, I would wait another couple of weeks before trying to predict. There is clearly a bid difference between the barred left chick and the barred right chick (though, verdict still out on right chick. Might be lighter barring than left chick, but still seems on the dark side for a Roo, based on my experience with BRs.)

Who is broody in the "wilds" of the middle of the tall grass guess recap:

@RebeccaBoyd : Primula
@RoyalChick : Pear, Maizie at a stretch
@Ponypoor : "one of my lovely girls" with the aid of autocorrect changing the story...:tongue Be more specific.

@bgmathteach : Not Jessica, so Maizie or Primula, Silver is "too old" except Crop Girl (5) made her eat those words.

So far my only response has been Jessica is broody, safely in the coop.

Any other takers? Answer will be posted Sunday afternoon unless life gets in the way.

See, now, if you had a Dark Cornish, I would be all over that!!!

Last I posted about this, I had 2 hens brooding hatched chicks and 4 broody.

Well, I now have 3 hens brooding hatched chicks......and 5 broody.
(2+4 = 6)
+1 -1
3 + 3 = 6
how did I end up with 3 + 5???????)

:confused: How did that happen? :confused: (And I thought buying some chicks would be a good idea....If I hadn't bought them, guaranteed that I would not have had so many more go broody!

😢 I made the decision today that the Meloxicam is not enough to help Peanut live a good chickeny life. She really can't move, or doesn't want to move much, it must be too uncomfortable, and there is no promise of recovery from cancer, things will be getting worse, and quickly I think. So I'm taking her to the vets tomorrow (turns out they don't do weekend house calls). She hasn't wanted to leave the nestbox today, at least through 4 o'clock when I had to leave to work, and I don't want to leave it until she is suffering even more.

For those of you who have done this, and those who haven't, I'd appreciate your thoughts on travel companion(s) for Peanut - I brought Butters (a calm hen) with her as a companion on her treatment visit previously. Do I do that again, with Butters, or maybe everyone, so there's less loss of company on the return trip, or take her there by herself, with no one (which doesn't seem right as far as how I did it last time)? And then later, if she is in a box, maybe, put her somewhere in the run back home, where they can see her, say goodbye, or know she has died? Or is it better for them if she just disappears and doesn't leave the box?

Initial reaction: they need to see her too. If you take a companion, then the companion travels home alone....

If you take all of them, 1. Can they travel together reasonably well? 2. Can the vet check the others over at the same time?

Agree it doesn't seem right to take her alone. By that thought, it isn't right for the companion to travel home alone either, nor is it right for the one left behind to be alone. Based upon all that, I think the right way is for all to go, if possible.
