News and such…

I have accepted a job from a company that does civil work with pipelines and such; it’s full time no contract stuff, 21 days working and 7 days off, I will be in British Columbia and will fly home for my days off.

So Alex will have to make up for any absences I will have here, and I hope I don’t miss any news, anyone wishing to jibber-jabber with me please feel free to PM me

One of the other issues when having animals is having them all the same age, so when they get old they all seem to pass at the same time.

As for putting the chicks out in the run - mine were running around on the ground where all my older hens were - they were stepping in chicken poop and digging through yummy horse poop from an early age. They would pick at heaven knows what in the barn and much to my stress level picking at the poop from the barn swallow nest - I tried to keep that swept up as much as I could, when they got a bit older they learned what to actually eat.

And even with mama hens showing them what to eat, the chicks still picked at ‘crap’. I have seen baby animals eating poop all the time, even my foals would eat poop - ewwww! My vet told me it’s how they get their intestine biome in place.

Yep - apparently I am a mere hr to the airport (niiiice! No hrs long drive on logging roads to get to an airport). And I can fly direct from T.O.

I hear nice sailing out there, my mum and dads friend had a sail boat and would go sailing for days at a time alone - but he has now sold his boat he is getting close to 80 and doesn’t feel comfortable sailing alone anymore.

How is Dakota? Is she ok with the heat? I lost track of how your kiddos are doing with the heat.

Edit: re- poop and the foals would have green lips after and try to come up and ask for hugs and scratching yuck!

Exactly, I haven’t seen Popcorn poop so will watch her. I will wait for now to hear back from the vet. I could arrange a flock check again, or a visit for these two. Popcorn and Hazel have never been x-rayed, maybe that would show something. I did email those poo pics and description to the vet, they expressed interest in updates on Butters, and I’ve communicated with her with an update since the last visit about Butters and she replied.

I feel depressed about it though, this might be Popcorn or Hazel, on top of Butters teetering on the edge of dying so underweight for unknown reasons, and Peanut’s passing so recently, and losing the two new little ones was very hard. Treating whoever it is early might lessen the scarring and give whoever it is a better chance in the future, but it’s not good news for whoever it is. I spent my time outside today with them and hand feeding Hazel, & trying to make progress on the run expansion for the chicks, but not much with the actual chicks today until this evening, it was rainy for most of the day. Spent time tonight inside with them and made a new set of things to fly and jump on with the walker repurposed, but that’s all.

Can the chicks go on the run litter that’s been there for about a year now, or is it potentially too big a dose of whatever things the hens might be carrying around in them? I usually rake it out and replace it once a year in the Fall and haven’t done that yet. That’s the sheltered part of the run with electric and I could have them out there in a protected see no touch corner even in the rain and have their brooder plate with them during the day too.

Remind me how old the chicks are? I have never put my young ones into the same coop/run until they were at least 6 weeks old.

I'm hoping for the best for Butters, and/ whoever that poo is from.

Today may have not been a good day/not lots of time with the chicks - but you will have more. They clearly love you - always wanting to be where you are and hoping up on you

There will be better days. More poor ones, too, but more better ones as well. With great caring comes great pain & loss. Just remember the good times - both past and now - you wouldn't hurt as much if you didn't also love and cherish the time with them.
