Jailbreak at Chickatraz!

Newly installed perch + lots of calisthenic wing flapping exercises for two days = this...

Then this.....Gauging height + distance

Bingo! She was short, but hooked her chin on the top edge and with tremendous effort, flapping like mad, pulled and climbed up.

This one got a closer launch spot and easily managed, but her perch was really wobbly. Third one left behind started peeping but then blasted up too. Soon they got up on my shoulder, which I loved. Can't say I was anxious to get the top on, I want them flying!

Got them to bed by lowering the lights, putting them in again, then getting down right next to the brooder plate and calling them. They hopped down. Stuck my arm in the lower hatch opening there, tapped on the warm side, & cupped the kiddos next to my hand under there. Little beaks in my fingers, love it! ❤️
They sure are giving you a run for your money!

What a day, I spent the morning doing my job hunt - not sure who thinks there is a shortage of workers…. I don’t see it at all.

Anywhoo then I noted one of my nieces hens had a poppy butt so I went and started washing it, and that’s when all sh1t hit the fan.

Upon removing poops I turned her over and she was crawling maggots. Lots of swearing and running around gathering supplies to deal with that. Tripping over stupid roosters (yep they are all going except Mr P of course), trying to remove maggots, I cut off all her feathers as close to the skin as I could, then I washed her again in a bath of disinfectant soap, trying to scrub the maggots off her skin, and once I got the ones off I could I flipped her over again and inspected her.

It looked like a pocket where more maggots were residing so I flushed that with peroxide and them rinsed her off in another bath.

Then I hauled out the tweezers and started picking off maggots. Then I got out the blow dryer and dried her off. Once she was dry I could see the full extent of her wounds, her belly seems to have necrotic tissue and I could still see maggots lurking in part of the wound.

I had to wait while they came out into the air, so I dosed her with Ivermectin to kill the little flickers, I also hat her a mega dose of antibiotics (500mg of Amoxicillin), 1/2 a low dose aspirin and Tylenol. If they doesn’t kill her and she survives the maggots and her skin heals she might be ok.

Then it was back to plucking maggots, I grabbed a few more and couldn’t see any more so I gave her some mash, and put her in the large crate away from anyone who wanted to peck her.

I cannot tell you all how guilty I feel for not nipping this in the bud sooner. Totally my fault for not keeping on top of poopy butts. Poor Red 😢

Tomorrow anyone with a remotely poopy butt is getting a Brazilian done.
Aww… this sounds incredibly stressful for all of you. Hugs.

Hi friends. I miss you all. Just checking in. You may know I work for the public school system. School just started and work has been very busy. Also, we just moved our youngest into her college dorm last weekend. I need to get my irises in this weekend and a dear friend recently lost her husband, also a dear friend, to glioblastoma. This weekend we are helping her prep for his celebration of life.

The chickens are doing well. You may recall I’m down to seven… in order by age and rank… Bridge, Buttercup, Roxy, Little Mill, Minnie Minnie, Flo and Flash. Bridge, Roxy, Flo and Flash are actively molting. Not sure about Buttercup. Little Mill and Minnie Minnie are not, but I sure hope they don’t molt while we’re in Europe, as they both take their molts HARD (they have both had neurological symptoms during molt).

I haven’t taken photos of any of them in ages. Maybe I will this weekend.

I hope everyone is well. I’m so sorry I have not been able to keep up, not even with a weekly synopsis.

Hi all, hope all is good, all good out here in BC - smoky and hot , it was 32C today.

I am crazy busy and exhausted so just popped in to say hi, mum says all my chooks are behaving, and horses too.

Ok I will try to catch up tomorrow, but I don’t have internet here (do not get me started 😡) so I am hogging the work cellphone data - bad Kelly!

You are dearly missed. Thanks for popping back in. I can't wait to see photos of the ladies or dare I suggest one of your special videos?
