Butters is failing today. I'm not sure she'll live through the night. Yesterday she was eating and drinking and fairly active, but today mostly resting, not wanting to move much. It seemed she wasn't steady on her feet, especially one side, and I wondered if she hurt something. Her comb and face is normal red. Later when I gave her some walnut bits, she wanted them, but it seemed her beak was pretty dry and ate some then stopped eating. She went over to the feeder and tried to eat but the crumbles were very dry in her beak too. So she got herself over to a sunny protected spot and rested. When the sun moved she moved too, but not very well. I felt her crop and decided to tube-feed her some baby bird mix thinking it would give her nutrition and fluid, and I syringe-fed her 3ml of water & electrolytes too, all right there in the sun. She stayed where she was for a couple of hours.

So at 6pm I got her and sat with her by the coop and said my goodbyes and just hung out with her on my lap for half an hour. She slept and looked around a bit. I put her in the nestbox, because that's where she puts herself to bed and it feels safe, and the others would soon be in, and she would have her usual company. I fluffed the hemp so it would be soft. 😢

Tonight I caught up Mt P and removed a whole plethora of nit sacks and plucked out any clumps of feathers with them, he had a huge matted area under his wings, I was able to remove the one side, started on the other side but I figured he had enough, so I gave him some Tylenol and put him back in the Hen House.

It also gave me an opportunity to check on how he is molting - and that is really heavily, he has a goodly mix of pin feathers mixed in with his existing feathers, and he must be not feeling the best. I also noted his beak is tending towards being overgrown, I trimmed it back last week, his top beak tends to have a hook at the end. I know this is a fault in chickens as their beaks should end and meet together.

This is likely causing him to not be able to groom himself properly. I am going to have to manage his beak more I guess, and do a better job in checking him over for parasites. So unfortunately buddy you are going to have to be handled more. I think I will give him Tylenol for a few days as he has been not too active, mostly just snoozing in the sun and not breeding very much; also not running to the hens when they call, I am sure all those gazzillion pin feathers must be achy. The pain meds hopefully will make him feel a bit better.

Poor Mr P, but I think I plucked a whole crap load of the nits off him, and I didn’t see one live creepy crawly on him at all - yay! I’ll treat him again on Saturday with the fly spray it seems to work wonderfully. So if you can’t find a treatment for lice or mites horse fly spray work great!

This is the one I used

Interesting.....that might explain why the limestone is disliked by many of the birds, but liked by manufacturers...... more to think about. Wonder how the can make it look like the limestone pellets?
I need to look up these limestone pellets.

And one of the reasons I didn’t want to use the Peavey Mart brand of feed as the ingredients listed limestone in it.

Butters has passed. She was still breathing when I checked her on camera at 5:40 this morning. Her body is stiff but still warm. No big spasm, her head and feet look like she was sleeping though she had moved forward from before. Rest In Peace dear Butters :hit :love❤️❤️ 😢

It is a mystery what ailed her, her molt had been progressing with the tube feeding and then her own eating, but seemed to slow, and on Monday her weight was down again.
