Wow he is a very handsome wee lad!

Happy Thanksgiving BTW, miserable day here today, didn’t get above 5 all day and heavy rain. Not sure if it wouldn’t be better if it snowed it’s so yucky.

I worked Hen House ‘B’ today after I closed the barn up, closed all the windows left Lulus and the back screen door everything else was closed the wind was raw. And of course the chooks refused to go outside so they all stayed in and help with the framing of the new hen house. It’s wonderful having 30 extra pairs of eyes to point out my ‘measure twice cut once’ errors!

Good luck with your building project! I want to convince the youngsters to start roosting in the big coop as their baby coop is too small for all six of them over the winter. I am not sure which would be more stressful for them: if the door to their coop was closed and they had to go in the big coop to roost or moving them after dark.

They already hang out on the nice roost that I made them opposite from the adults in the big coop, but only during the daytime. As is usual with chickens, I am sure there will be drama!

Yep I would count on that!

I would love them at night in the dark. And try to get to them early next morning to let everyone outside so no squabbling.

Might take a few nights to get them used to the Big Coop.

Without being too much of a skeptic, I hope you don't give them any money until you meet that little silkie in person. There have been some chicken scams which is just awful to get someone's hopes up and then scamper off with their money.

I hear ya, even now it’s about 6:45am before it gets light. Not as bad as being in the near north up in the boreal forest working, sun gets up around 9am then and gets dark around 4pm

I have stated my flock did not feel complete without a silkie hen. After Chiquita's loss I did not actively look for a replacement hen. I was thinking about starting the search again in the spring but open to the idea if I stumbled across the right one. I have saw a couple semi local posted. I never inquired because they were being sold in pairs or trio's with a roo that had to go with them. I wanted a black hen. She is not solid black, but close enough and she feels right.

He is coming into his hormones now, but so far he's been well -behaved.

He is respectful of the hens' space and if one comes in to the small coop while he is there, he leaves and lets them eat all their food!

He is starting to tidbit although some of his offerings are pathetic - like a spruce needle! The hens totally ignore his tidbitting attempts, but a few pullets rush over to see what he's got.

Help him out with that. When you take treats out, give him a bit first. Let him tidbit over it. The older ladies will start paying attention when he has the good stuff and he'll figure out that the good stuff is what you report on. It will also help him NOT consider you a threat. Once at least 1 lady is checking out his goody, you can start distribution to all, just keep sending goodies his way through the process.
