"decorative fluffy crested what-nots". We are talking about silkies right? If so, do it. I resisted silkies for a few years and was wrong to do so. Silkies are actually so much more then decorative chickens. The hens I have found when not broody are reliable egg layers or small eggs. That is ok. Those small eggs, fit perfectly on a piece of toast for a sandwich or great size for a younger child for a fried egg. When they are broody, and at some point your silkie will be broody. It is not a matter of if, but a matter of when, they are hard to beat as a mother. My Chiquita was right up there with Momma Hen as far as being a good mother hen. Chiquita even adopted chicks after setting on nothing for 5 weeks. She would not break so leghorns magically appeared for her out of thin air. The best thing about silkies that I have found, their snuggles and willingness to be loved on.
And they’re great at dusting the furniture! :old

Why do you always take pictures of me while I'm taking a dust bath?! I sure look like an old man now! 🤣

And our pet pigeon "Pichon" ! I love to be in pictures!

Ya like Marty and Mr P - the little holy terror gave me a good bit again, I snuck up on Mr P, grabbed him and all H E double L broke loose! He screamed like a banshee, and Marty ran over and grabbed my hand and wouldn’t let go, all the whole flogging me Ol’ Momma Hen style.

All I wanted to do was give him his final spray for his creepy crawlies!

Oh no! They can be feisty! The only time I have ever seen my young Roos even think about getting macho is when I have needed to pick up one of the jubilee pullets and they kick up a fuss. Fortunately, they settle fairly quickly and nothing has come of it.

I am glad to see a little bit of protectiveness though, I think it’s rather sweet that they look out for one another.

Sorry you got hurt in the process though, that looks painful :(
Brilliant! @RoyalChick who's egg would you like, provided she's laying/starts again soon, and I can figure out which one is hers?
Ha! You know she would be the one ☝️ person who did manage to hatch out ALL pullets if we did send her eggs 😂

I have to say despite my somewhat traumatic first experience with attempting to keep a Rooster, my Orps are so laid back and really no trouble at all (so far, knocking on wood) Honestly, since they absolutely refuse to fight back against the hens and pullets, its the boys I worry about getting hurt! (Looks directly at Story) Heck, they still don’t even crow 😂
