Silkies are actually so much more then decorative chickens. The hens I have found when not broody are reliable egg layers or small eggs. That is ok. Those small eggs, fit perfectly on a piece of toast for a sandwich or great size for a younger child for a fried egg. When they are broody, and at some point your silkie will be broody. It is not a matter of if, but a matter of when, they are hard to beat as a mother. My Chiquita was right up there with Momma Hen as far as being a good mother hen. Chiquita even adopted chicks after setting on nothing for 5 weeks. She would not break so leghorns magically appeared for her out of thin air.
