I wait until they're roosting to close the coop and do head count. Summer is a bit more of a challenge, but they head in on their own when the sun is sinking behind the mountains. They top up their crops, have a drink, and find a roosting spot where they preen their feathers. That's a good time to do head count. The teens come in more slowly and with more energy, but are hanging out just outside by then too.I keep trying that but they keep running around! I do a head count all the time due to my paranoid nature! I just know they are escaping or up to no good! Hahaha!
