Yes, they sedate them prior to administration of the substance they use to euthanize them. I know this with the horsesThe vet here did give Peanut a liquid knock-out medicine by mouth first, but that just put her into some sort of sleep. It took a couple of minutes for her. She then used another med by a vein to actually euthanize her. We waited until Peanut appeared to be truly unconscious and the vet said to not wait long after that because the sleep is not a normal sleep and if you wait it can feel distressing to them.
