Baby update

They sure have grown this past week, and now getting their wing feathers! Betty’s wing feathers are starting to curl. Also I can now really see that she doesn’t have leg feathers, and only her one foot has 5 toes.

Bert, has lovely feathered legs and 5 toes, also when I picked him up he didn’t struggle and just seemed to accept his fate at being held.

Miss Betty had a lot to say about being picked up haha.

Ohhhh, look at those wing feathers!!! By next weekend, they will be flying (well, at least Bert - Betty with the frizzle feathers will be fly-hopping!)

Baby chicks are SO.DARN.CUTE. 🥰 🥰 🥰

Got another egg today that looks like first egg size. Not sure who's egg.I'm not sure who's laying that bronze egg, either.

And Cardhu was checking out the nest boxes when I got home and closed the coop. (Girl, it's a mite late to be laying eggs, but by all means investigate them all...and properly lay in the coop, not out in the wilds like your mama and egg donor: Storm, Pear👀I'm looking at you)
You know, I hate to say this ('cause I CERTAINLY understand the frustration of the 'hidden nest egg hunt!") BUT.... I have also found that, generally speaking, the egg hiders are the ones who generally go broody and tend to be more predator alert (i.e. just a bit more of their wild ancestor's instincts, I think.)

SOOOOO...while I do not envy you having to hunt for eggs and hidden nests - especially with the prevalence of uncontrolled dogs in your area - who go as much by scent (or quick movement - which won't be the case with a sitting hen) as anything, I do hope Cardhu is a nest builder/egg hider. I love her and want her to be smart and broody!!!!

😁 sorry @rural mouse, I just had to put that out there😁 I'll try not to mention it again!

The one thing I hate about keeping chickens, is waking up excited to see your babies and finding one that didn't wake up.
One of my Japanese Bantams roosters fell asleep for the final time. He was looking off yesterday kinda sluggish like they do when they have coccidia. I treated their water. Cleaned the coop and run
I wasn't ready. His brother wasn't wither apparently because he's been doing a low one note crow all morning. He looks so sad that I honestly think he may go to from a broken heart. I have him separate for thr coccidia just in case so I don't know what to do. He is all by himself.
RIP Marty.
Me and McFly miss you already sweet boy.
What a lovely boy! @RoyalChick would think so, too, as she is just besotted with iridescent black chickens!

:hugs:hugs:hugsI'm so sorry you lost him - and, yes, his brother is probably in mourning, just like you are. :hugs :hugs :hugs

Should I get him a friend or try and integrate him with a small bantam flock that had its established roo?

Very sad to hear this, it’s one of the aspects of having pets. Hopefully McFly is ok 😟

Yes right now they are flap hopping bopping about, I had them out for a bit.

I put them back in the crate though as they were getting a bit chilled even hiding under mama.

Broody hens means more babies!

And we all love babies!

First outing

Babies were out and about a bit, Marty came out and picked a fight with Henny - I had to break it up in case babies were hurt.

The chickie-loos were digging and scratching about, but once they started getting chilly (even under mama) I herded them back into the feedroom and popped them back in their crate. They will soon figure out hopping up into the feedroom, and everything else as @bgmathteach stated haha!

First egg

(Well who knows she may have been laying while I was away)
First egg from the one and only Tippy McChickie - finally. I have lost count of how many weeks old she is.

And @BY Bob its anther pink one! HRH must have put out a decree to only lay pink eggs 💕
