I was supposed to go somewhere on Saturday but I suppose I'm going to hunker down and ride it out at home. I enjoy a good must stay home storm every once in a while.

I love how my youngsters will brave the cold snow for a few minutes, but the older ladies are not happy with going out in the snow. They will for a couple minutes to peck at some green grass poking through the snow - but then they all run back inside to warm up and dry off their feet.

Henny is about the only one who doesn’t mind the snow - I often wonder if it’s because of her feathered feet.

They have personality that is for sure. Now that I know serial stalker turned serial pecker Dottie is only doing this for attention and affection I am again happy with my choice on them. The stalking is never ending, always right there a few steps behind, growling and talking to me. I had better at some point stop and bend over to at least pet her during one of my trips outside. If I go more then 2 without petting her, she lets me know by pecking my pant legs. Spot is a nosy busybody as well, she also watches me. She just does not need to be touched like her sister. As long as she can see what I am doing and be in range incase food is offered she is happy.
Awwww 😊 she thinks of you as a flock mate that’s wonderful.

I’ve read a *majority* of Bob’s thread… but have to admit this isn’t ringing any bells. Dare I ask what happened? Was it related to shipping chicks?
All caught up. Oh my, what a horrible ordeal. 😔

The only positive to come out of it was this quote from @RoyalChick :
“I am sitting here wondering if there is anyone who doesn’t chicken in their PJs”

Could you not order them by gender?
This isn’t a hatchery with sexed chicks. This year I’m going a different route than before and found a small breeder just a little over an hour’s drive away- she doesn’t offer sexed chicks or vaccinations (both major cons). But I couldn’t figure out a better way to get “quality” marans, who would lay darker than a 4 on the color chart.

Thirsty Thursday: Fresh water not out of the nipple waterer, our favorite!

Concerning:
Today was a free range day. Perry ran for the dust bath (as per the usual), and was really going to town. Fearing she would miss a prime opportunity to mingle with the flock without a barrier between them, after like 15 minutes I scooped her up and brought her out to them.

Which led to a moment of deep concern: her legs didn’t seem to work properly. Once I placed her on the ground, she couldn't stand up. And to move around she waddled on her ankles. It lasted for several long minutes. Instantly my mind went to
1) mareks
2) spinal damage
3) the dust bath was SO good, and she had SO much sand on her, that she couldn’t walk. Somehow.
Then it went away and she went about her business in the yard with the others as though nothing happened.

These are her current digs: a teeny, drafty, temporary coop. Will need to get her in the big coop for next week’s cold temps.

Tax for all this chicken talk: baby is cutting her first tooth, and learning to stand.🥰 (read between the lines: this means nobody is getting any sleep at night.)

Whooey it’s warm at your place! 70 is what we bump our temperature up to when the kids need to do some naked time 😂🤭
Mum and I decided long ago that it was ridiculous walking around inside with jackets on 😁

Even my feedroom/office in the barn is kept at 50F at least. Marty appreciates it with her bald butt 😊
