You meant BETTY and BERT, right? (not Bert and Betty??????)
Hahaha sure if you want left to right - Betty and Bert.

Betty is a secure Canadian Woman Chook and doesn’t mind if her wee brother is always listed first 😊

You know surprisingly Bert is very timid, he won’t eat from my hand at all! Betty is very keen on hand feeding and following me for treats - Bert is one big chicken (pun intended). I am hoping this means he will be just like his Dada. If so then he’s definitely a keeper.

And what’s with that winter storm warning?!

This storm is gonna be huge!
They can’t decide whether we’re going to get huge amounts of snow next week in the PNW, or just get plunged into an attic freeze. But luckily the temperature forecast became more moderate with lows near 11f (-11C! That must be the magic number) rather than -2f. I can’t quite tell, but do think the front is ginormous enough that we’re going to get hit by the same one.

Tax: this is sweet little Vulture. She was a chick that I raised this summer (Albert & Whiskey’s hatch mate). She now lives relatively happily w a neighbor’s flock- but she is the one that Fez scalped! So she has to deal with a permanent bald patch and limited visibility due to eyelid damage.

I wonder when my premium membership ends does it revert back to the default?

Yes, when your PFM ends, you revert back to 'just an average Joe' with ads, just like before you got the PFM.

I have been giving Larry calcium at night but I am not sure what or if she is laying, but yesterday I found two nest boxes with broken eggs in them. I am wondering if my older ladies are laying those brittle eggs.
It varies by hen, of course, but yes, as they age they are more prone to laying brittle shelled eggs. You might want to increase (a bit) the calcium rich foods you give as treats - and try to have it for mostly the older hens (i.e. if the youngers ones are in a different 'HenHouse, let the older gals out first and give them a mash with greek yogurt or Kefir or something - then let the rest out once it is mostly gone. ?Just a thought?
I imagine that as they all get older I can expect this more and more - any thoughts anyone?

Yes I have oyster shell available and yes I see them pecking at it.

Chook Plan

So this year I have decided that I will likely maybe not get chicks (we shall see on that I still want those Brahma), instead my niece is hell-bent on hatching more chicks again for her school - sheesh.

I told her I would give her Silkie eggs this time and she can hatch out a bunch of silkies for me. Thus I will ask my friend if I can borrow her rooster and setup the silkies (Henny, Fluffy, Curly, and Marty) along with wee rooster man in the Summer House so I am sure they will be only bred by him.

Does anyone know how long I need to keep the girls away from Mr P so his genes aren’t in the mix??? I was thinking a month, as I know hens can store sperm a long whole.

To be honest I was planning this anyways, I really like the silkies and contrary to belief when not broody they are my best layers!

I miss these little beauties!

Chicken are tough beasts 💕😊

You know, I have not even had a chance to check out the weather forecast, I just got a quick look at temps this morning.

I am struggling here today with chores, my elbow is just aching, I am stiff and have a headache. Not motivated to do anything. It’s 10:30 and I still haven’t finished chores. The chooks are mad at me I won’t let them outside and leave the barn door open, it’s too cold for me to work in here on the Hen House B if it below freezing inside, my battery power tools don’t last long. Not to mention it’s cold on the hands not being able to wear gloves - never ever ever wear gloves when using a circular saw or drill - if the material ever got caught in the rotating parts you will not end up a happy camper! Better to risk a cut than tear a finger off! Ok Safety Talk for the day done 💕

All right my lovely peeps I must get back to work here and just ‘get er done’.

Hahaha they all stampeded when I came out of the feedroom thinking I would let them outside - sorry kiddos 😟

And I love how Marty and Henny are raising those chicks.
