Oh no! Poor fella, I really hate winter, you must be beside yourself with the cold and snow, has it warmed up any?

I wonder if something can be made to cover their comb and wattles to protect them, like a hood of some sort. You know like those covers they put on calves ears and bulls tender bits.

Hmmmmm I need to think on this.
Yes, it warmed up today, we hit 40. Sounds great right? Wrong! Already dropped down to 34 and has started back up snowing. Supposed to snow until early Saturday morning. If the weather forecaster is correct we could add several inches of wet snow on top of dry snow we already have. If I thought Bubba would wear a chicken snood I would give him one. That probably would make things worse. Last thing I need is to draw attention to it from eagle eyed Blueberry who loves to peck his comb. Now that I think about it, I need to get out tomorrow and grab him and get a really really good look at it. While yes there is signs of frostbite, Blueberry could have pecked him and made it bleed making the base of the point black.

Gosh I sure hope that it is just a case of being pecked, I sure hope it isn’t frost bite.

I checked Mr P’s head this evening, no more bleeding so the girls seem to be leaving him alone.

Those hens are so naughty! And Petunia and Eli-too are now fully integrated into Hen House A! They are now part of the big girls band. So now I have 19 of them in there sheesh! At least it’s warm in there for Curly and Marty.

I'm making pea soup so I soaked a half a cup of them for the girls, added chili powder, oregano, and garlic powder. They sure appreciate a hot lunch!

Gramma fell at her care home, she's now in the hospital with pneumonia and an UTI that went septic. :( Mom is with her and keeping us posted. I decided to make us all dinner to keep myself from worrying too much about gramma.
That is concerning. :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs

Sigh, I was afraid of this. My poor boy Bubba, who was the smartest and boycotted coming off the roost for the last 3 days for the most part, has a bad case of frostbite. The base of the middle point on his comb is black. I do not think right now his wattles are involved like last year. So far he is the only one showing any signs of it. Even the leghorns with their large floppy combs and wattles appear fine. Keeping them clean, dry and the wind off the chickens can only do so much when you hit 0F and large combs darn it.
I never had a case of frostbite until last year when Glynda was out in -15 °F wind chills. And I have had combs like these.

The Greatest Hen Ever never had frostbite and she was out in ambient air temps of well below 0°F. It's there any chance his comb got wet somehow? I just don't think that is normal for 0°F.
