Hi folks. My flock, too, is aging. Bridge will be eight this month. She has a bum leg, but here she is ranging today:

Little Mill has a bad leg, too, but has since she was a pullet. She’ll be seven in May. Since days are lengthening and Spring is threatening to come early, her hormones are kicking in. Darn! Can’t she be done with that already? The hormones caused her to bloat right up. However, here she is being gorgeous after low-dose aspirin:

Buttercup, Minnie Minnie and Roxy also say hello:

Unfortunately, I don’t have any current photos of the “babies,” Flo and Flash, who are 3 1/2. They both just started laying again.

I hope everyone’s doing well. Sorry I haven’t been active on BYC nor this thread. I just got really busy at work focusing on my personal health. It’s always nice to pop in!
Glad all your ladies are still around ❤️

Hello FBA!
I haven't been posting in a while but almost always following along. It's nice to see the younger ones growing and all starting to lay, and senior hens still doing well.

How exciting that queen Aurora turned five !
Although I have to say my heart is with those who have known misery and wandering, more than with the kings and queens. Momma hen will forever be my senior chicken hero.

@Sally PB I'm hoping the best for Pip and wanted to add that while it's certainly difficult to heal completely from salpingitis, I and others have had experiences of long remissions, for many months and even years. Pip is young, healthy, and it seems you caught this very early. Had she stopped laying for a few days or did this follow right away after normal eggs ? Healthy eggs not long before would indicate this had not been brewing for much time.

I'm still dealing with some chicken health issues also. Two of my older ex-batts are very unwell, Blanche and Cannelle. It has happened before and they made it through but now they are four and four months, so that is not young for production layers. Cannelle has ascites, like @Ponypoor 's Red. But they're both still fighting so I'm trying to support them without imposing invasive treatments. Chipie, my tiny crazy bantam, has been having strange neurological issue manifesting like a seizure with wry neck, though it happens only every now and then. Lilly's abscess between two fingers is stubborn and still not healed. And we had a big hawk land yesterday right next to Piou-piou, who is quite upset at being the target twice to predators in two months !
In better news we have made our run bigger and more secure and it's now completely covered, and while it's not big enough to let 17 chickens contained for a whole day, it would allow us to lock the two roosters together for a few hours if we really needed to.

A few mugs :

Lulu. No clue why she looks so angry at me.

And little Théo who still believes hands are meant to be pecked and destroyed.

Wonderful to hear from you also 🥰

And glad my Cinnamon Girl (Cannelle) and Blanche are still around, I have Red on 1/2 a low dose aspirin every night.

Théo is such a silly boy - I would steal him in a flash 😊💕

I will say with the difficulty of getting antibiotics at this point I am even more conservative regarding their usage.

Since they are concerned about salpingitis, I will revise my previous statement to say they should treat quickly. I did not interpret the "meaty" stuff as a lash egg. If you do, then you should treat.
Azygous (BYC memeber) was the one who thought it looked like lash material. I decided to treat with Amox out of caution.

Yeah, anitbiotics are much harder to get, and I don't use them lightly either. I felt I'd never forgive myself if Pippy died because I didn't.

I appreciate everyone's advice and good wishes. :thumbsup Pippy seems to be doing well; energetic and running around, hungry, drinking.

I bought a bottle of green food coloring (my choices were green or red; I wanted blue) and I'll mark her vent so that I can tell if she lays an egg.

I hope that pippy gets well soon!
Ash laid an egg so bloomed I thought I had a blue layer suddenly!

Kiddo got to give out sunflower seeds and broccoli to the girls.

She was having so much fun throwing them right into their backs...what a silly kid.

Good idea! And yes green a better choice - ever since poor Henny had a bleeding nail which coated her belly red and everyone was pecking her I am very cautious to not have red around the chooks!

Pip is eating and drinking. She's pooped a better looking poop too. It was still small and slimy, but more of it. She's been making soft cooing noises with a little bit of trill in them.

The crate is a small dog crate, so not much room. I have a blanket on the bottom with a piece of 2x4 for her to stand/roost on. It's tall enough for her to stand upright, which she's doing, and big enough for her to turn around.

I think one day inside should be enough...? She looks fine. Her eyes are bight, head is up. Or should she go back out with the flock now?

Any suggestions/opinions are welcome! This is the first time I've dealt with this problem.
How about probiotics and a little olive oil on her food 🤔.
