He is handsome. The person who runs the horse show for the last 7 years I will give credit to. She has allowed 2 in that time. 1 last year which resulted in a hen being turned loose which I sent Maddy in the ring to catch. That hen now resides with her grandma and the chickens she has gotten off of me. This Saturday the chase was not planned. One of the people just showed up with the chickens and told her he brought them for the kids at intermission. He caught her off guard around a group of children when he told her, he also did not tell her they were roosters. That was not known until they were brought in the ring to be let loose. They allow anyone to participate, and if you catch the chicken it is yours and you win $5. While cleaning up the concession after the show I was letting her have it in as nice a way possible while still visibly angry. I told her she did not know the headache she had just caused me. I told her I gave it 48 hours if that and they would be at my house fighting my boys. She knows I have chickens, she buys eggs from me. She also knows how much I love them especially the boys. She gets it, she has a Tom turkey who she has had for 3 years that is "her baby". Truthfully if the chase had not happened, those boys would have been dumped just like countless dogs have been over the years. The people who ran the show before, they advertised it and it was a regular thing. I love the horse shows, beautiful horses and for the most part great people. Just a few cold hearted idiots who do not see or treat chickens like I see them.Thank you so much for giving him a chance. Truly it means a lot, at least to me.
I don't believe in god like you do but I do believe that sometimes we get the possibility to give a meaning to what seem like terrible events, like @bgmathteach so well said. I strongly believe anytime we take the opportunity of doing a good deed we do exactly that. You most of anyone on this thread don't need to prove that you are a good person and I'm sure you would have been heartbroken to put Randy down without giving him a try.
I didn't react because I felt so angry reading his story I would have said something useless and inappropriate, and I realise you may want to keep good relations with some of those people doing this. If you can't get them to stop, could you at least try talking them into using a hen for the show that you could then try to catch and integrate in your flock without taking such a gamble ?
I feel so bad thinking about what it teaches those kids.
BFTP from september 2023 : Pied Beau, the prettiest and sweetest rooster that hatched here, happily rehomed and now king of a multi rooster flock.
