I had a nightmare last night. Dreamt that a coworker thought it a good idea to increase the amp number of an electrical panel from 15amp to 20 amp because the power supply was inadequate for his needs. That’s like putting a larger fuse on a circuit. Can burn up the whole system. Glad I awoke from that one. Dakota wanted to be fed anyways.

It’s like cleaning your gun with a live round still in the chamber. It’s gonna go off eventually!

I soaked his legs in warm water and opened the skin a bit with a pointy tweezer. It turns out there was a tiny feather completely curled up underneath the layer of skin, and underneath the feather, some pus. I pulled it all out. Good thing he is so tiny because he struggled like crazy ! I'm not sure if he felt humiliated or if it hurt- probably a bit of both. I could manage him because he is only 1kg. If it was Kara or Gaston my heavier chickens I couldn't have done that on my own.

I don't have betaine scrub, just plain betadine. Would it be worth it to get some ? My mum and I were just discussing this the other day, she found it strange that they cleaned her up prior to surgery with betadine scrub and put some betadine afterwards, and that they ask her to do the same at home on her scar. Isn't betadine scrub just soap to which iodine is added ?

Big and sweetie.

That made me think about it, but no, his feathers are actually too thin and small, I think that is why they don't manage to pierce the skin. Like girls who wax their leg hair off and it grows back too thin to come through the skin. If he didn't hate me so much 🙄 maybe it would help to soak him more often during his molt, but as it is, it's such a stress for him that I'll just check him regularly and do it only if it happens again.
He isn't a sweetie unfortunately. He can be a real little brat. But he has some good in him too...sometimes..I like him a lot otherwise he would have certainly become one of our neighbour's dinner !

I'm happy you caught this early and it seemed like a easy fix. I now have to wonder was this the root of my dear Bubba's problem with his feet. 2/3 of my flock have feathered legs and feet. I never had any problems other then a broken feather occasionally from all the digging. I feel I failed him. His issue first came about in the fall/winter when times were extremely hard with Grandma. I should have caught it then and I kick myself that I did not. I tell myself it is no excuse that all I had time or the energy to do was feed and gather eggs. It is no excuse that Bubba did not like to be handled so I would not take the time to chase him down and do a once over at least once a week. Bubba deserved more and I just did not give it to him.

I am on a mission now with Randy. I will develop a relationship with that rooster to where even if it takes me all evening I will be able to catch him. I do not care how tired or stressed I am every flock member needs to be held and looked over at least once a week. That also includes Grackle. She is a bit miffed at me but I have a step ladder outside now. If you will not let me catch you during daylight hours I will take you off the roost at night. Now I just need Randy to come out of that darn tree and take his place on the big roost with the girls. Any time now you little snot.

The chuckle is for the ‘little snot’. Well once it gets colder I bet the little snot will go with the others.

I don’t think feathers ingrown like n feet/legs would cause that issue with Bubba, it is more likely he had a systemic infection from something else and it settled there.

I just do not know. I should have inspected it further, but it was tough enough to do what I had to do. I laid him to rest. I could not desecrate his body which is what if felt like I would be doing.
