A cochin x EE would most likely lay green eggs. Cochins (pure bred) lay brown eggs. EE’s can lay assorted colors, most frequently blue. The blue shell color is dominate over white shell, so offspring should get the blue egg gene (assuming EE parent has 2 copies), while also getting the brown egg sprayer gene from the cochin which turns the blue egg green. (Works similar with blue brown green/hazel human eye color). More likely the light blue egg layer ISNT the cochin x EE mix. That being said, exceptions DO occur and thoroughly mix up genetics.

Which is why my pullets last year have blue eggs rather then the green/blue ones they hatched from - Mr P being polish would have white egg genes.

And which I why Betty lays pink eggs - the silkie peach coloured eggs would be toned down - right?

Bingo! Now, I'm not sure how a mix (ie green layer) would cross with a white on a consistent basis: lighter green (white lightening the blue), brown (getting just the brown sprayer from mom and the white from Mr P), light blue (not getting the brown sprayer from mom).... I don't know enough about how genetics pass down over multi-generations (and haven't observed enough) to do more than GUESS (and guess big).

Very interesting! It would be hilarious if that big ol cochin lays bantam sized eggs haha. I will keep an eye on them and see what I can find out.
I will try to get vet wrap tomorrow so I can re-wrap Nocturnes foot. It may have to be Saturday, tomorrow is very busy!

One of my girls (Shan) is the offspring of my little hamburg roo, Cheetah, and one of my dark brahma ladies (either Primula or Belladonna). The dark brahmas both lay light brown FAT, almost golf ball round eggs. Shan lays tiny little eggs the same size/shape as her half sisters, Lark and Indigo, but is body shaped like her mother.

Dark brahma at the bottom (the white eggs were more pointy before last year's moult, too, and the dark brahmas are the same age (within a few weeks) as Lark and Indigo)

Such an odd colour isn’t she? It’s like dapples. Dapple grey chicken

And she has a crest so she can’t be a Sapphire Gem as I thought she was. More likely one of their olive Eggers.

Whatever she is she’s a unique colour that’s for sure.

I was surprised when Butterscotch laid a pink egg! I was sure she would also lay blue. Which means her mum has to be Sophia or Blanche. I would bet Sophia. The white colouring has thrown me off. All the other hens back then laid green/blue eggs.

It doesn’t really matter I have no interest in hatching any more eggs. I am turned off the whole thing now with all this Roo trouble.

Those brahma eggs look spot on to the cochin ones I got this summer to hatch!
I will continue to think this egg is from one of my sweet bantams

Yes a sapphire olive egger!
Ash is one but must be a different breed combo as she is neither dappled nor crested

She's my hungry girl though, so curious and talkative.

Eeeeeeeee today is the day!
We decided on Nocturne (nox) for the black hen. Nyx and Nox, both names for a night goddess.

My mother in law is also excited to get Cookie and Cream, she's never had chickens before and I'll be doing the work for her so she can just enjoy the fun bits haha. Dad-in-law wants to get a small coop in town but I don't think they'd have good luck, right beside a school and there are lots of raccoons in the town they live in.

Hubby says we can just get hatching eggs a few times a year to raise meat birds, that way we can let them be broody-raised. It is SO much easier having a mama hen.

Love the names & that chicken math has grabbed your family teehee! I love the name "Cookie" as in Oreo cookies! Cream is cute too. Shoot! They're ALL cute!
