Henny always goes broody this time of year and raises winter babies

Regarding wattles and combs, and also feathered feet….. I think the take away message is to keep them dry, and out of the wind/draft.

This holds true for all livestock, pets and people. In the wild you will see animals hunkered down in bad weather, we humans need to provide out animals with the same opportunities to get into a protected area.

This is also how Henny can successfully raise chicks in the winter - if a warm up area is provided they do fine.

I feel is humans are less adaptable to the cold hahahah - I certainly do not like the cold and wet!

Of course they do not like deep snow!

Even when I shovelled it 🤨

I love my Azurs they are a really nice Leghorn hybrid- though I wish they wouldn’t lay so many eggs! They are curious funny nosey chooks who always have to know what you’re doing 😊

Haven’t had an issue with frost bit yet, as long as they are out of the wind and don’t get wet they should be fine.

I really worried about Mr P’s wattles but he was fine.
You have a nice setup in your barn for frost combat where both horses & poultry are nicely protected.

Yes. Leghorns & Leg hybrids who inherit the prolific egg-laying are at highest issues for poor health. It's almost criminal. Yet, Leghorns are a such a sweet active curious lot they continue being popular friendly egg layers. Our Legs would follow us around the yard to see what we were doing. I believe our Legs were the smartest bunch too.

All men are perpetually 9 years old. Our toys are just more expensive.

You've seen my husband's car, that's as close to a toy as we can get right now 😆
Honestly though, Mini Cooper is my favorite make of car so we got lucky getting the countryman. We used to own a Mazda rx-8 and that was a great car. Nothing runs like a wankel engine.
Car tax, a hot rod rooster
(Stripes and wattles and there's even a comb!)

Are you saying that people who have leghorns should send them to the Mediterranean?:gig
Oh, my sir ~ a Mediterranean CLIMATE ~ teehee. Thats why so many come to the mild climate of the Calif valleys to raise citrus, grapes, & the famous Leghorn. But if you want to, I suppose it's your prerogative to send your Legs to the Mediterranean?

Daisy successfully survived temperatures as low as -10°F (-23°C) with no frost bite to that magnificent comb. It is about moisture. Keep it dry and they can survive very low temperatures intact if necessary. Proper ventilation of your coop is essential.
Yes, good ventilation w/o drafts or moisture is key. But I'm such a worrier that if we had a frost warning (rare here) I would put protection of E+coconut oil on combs/wattles cuz i never wanted to see the ugly burn tips on those beautiful red combs. A bit over-solicitous as frost precaution, I know, but it doesn't hurt, the hen likes the comb/wattle massage, & there's the safe side-benefit too.
