The meat birds are done. Shep had to be euthanized, she caught something and was struggling to breathe. I did a basic necropsy, no gapeworms, but her lungs looked a bit phlegmy. She was hubby's bird, she went right up to him this morning to show him she wasn't feeling good and get a cuddle. Hubby was so frustrated at losing her he said "call dad and your friend, we're butchering today. I'd rather eat em small over losing any more." 6 lived until harvest day, less than half of what we started with.

We will not be buying birds from farms any more. Eggs, sure. In fact, my friend offered to buy a dozen dark cornish eggs to hatch in spring. I'll source some barred rock and orpington eggs as well, I'd love to add those to my laying flock too.

Sorry to hear this, but have to do what you have to.

Might I suggest othering meat chicks from Hoovers - I have nothing but the best to say about the chicks I have bought from them.

They offer a wide variety of meat birds as well as layers. This way you don’t have to risk incubating eggs.

Do ranchers' cattle ever graze over your property? Our vacant Northern Calif mountain property has local ranchers that are allowed to graze their loose cattle in the Modoc national preserve but they graze over onto local private lands too (5K to 9,000 ft levels). But before the winter snow starts in November the owner/ranchers conduct a roundup to drive the herds to lower elevations. It's all symbiotic & friendly cuz the county is about 75% natural preserve protected from development ~ nature/wildlife is allowed to go undisturbed. It's like another world there!

Stormy was on my lap for awhile today. She hasn't done that in a looooong time!

Then she got down, and Sunny hopped up.

So I had my two "weather" chickens on my lap today.

I swear you need 1 silkie. Actually you need 1 silkie rooster. Within 2 weeks you would come back on here and change your tune. You would once again have a house loving, tv watch partner in crime.

So true ~ except just one Silkie does not fare well alone w/standard birds ~ at least 4 to 6 minimum Silkies so they can form their own flock group.

Silkies are probably the most addictive bantam to own ~ they're incredibly industrious as any other chicken breed, easy to handle, great lap birds, funny, cute, biggest of the bantam breeds so their eggs are a decent size, they will brood any egg-size put under a broody Silkie, gentle temperaments, many color choices, visitors are not afraid of them, & they are just as smart or dumb as any other breed! They can jump incredibly high for a little Silkie, about 4ft. We like that they can't fly over the wall out of the yard.

Have to say those OEGB bantams I have are so adorable - they are rivaling my silkies for most adorable!

Today the pullet hopped up on my back to visit - she sometimes does that when she wants attention. Or warming up she and Georgie are just so darn cute!

Sigh. No pictures. I wanted to get some of Stormy, but I was afraid to move my arm to get the phone. I didn't think to get it out of my pocket when I sat down. I'll have to remember to do that from now on.
