There she is by that pumpkin.

And that grey is Laverne the lavender Orp pullet. She looks way bigger than Flopsy but they weigh about the same - Laverne is just really fluffy.

Orps must have more feather follicles than other breeds to look so fluffy. What amazed us was how small a chicken body is without feathers. After a bath we can see how small a Silkie really is!

Sad that featherless chickens are being bred to make processing easier?

Oh, poor thing. Can't our chickens at least be comfortable before they're culled and processed? :(

My grandparents tried meat chickens (broilers maybe?) one year. These ones were bred to only grow in about half of their feathers, maybe even less. They looked absolutely miserable. They never did meat chickens again after that.

Yes, very sad :(. Cornish Cross broiler/meat chickens are bred to grow abnormally FAST to process them at 6 to 8 wks old. Barbaric! Unfortuately those are the chicken meat sold in supermarkets, restaurant menus, or fast food drive-thru's. Yuck!

The original Dark Cornish Game is a normal bird w/ a normal grow rate

Sounds very much like the slavic domovoi including the tendancy to be grumpy and play tricks. Maybe it's a common figure in various lore ? Or it made it's way through Finland.

I'm not sure that's a good idea... Momma hen's spirit will just make them find another hidden spot🤗. Better a hidden spot that you know, than a spot you have no clue about.

When Merle last came out of broodiness five weeks ago and started looking for a place to lay on top of our 8 feet high wooddtack, at the very bottom that's utterly unreachable, my partner had the excellent idea of making a nest on an intermediate platform.
He knew what would happen.
It just took longer than we expected - five weeks not sitting is her record in more than a year.

Oh no, that spot is getting blocked. I now have a nightmare. It involves a whole row of silkies plus some of my big girls all lined up in the back at the same time. They would do it too first chance they got.

It's Monday and I have some mugs for you.

The only mug earning her keep right now is Judy. I am hoarding every precious egg from her for Thanksgiving baking. As of this morning I finally have exactly 1 dozen. I know it is just a matter of time before I loose her eggs. All her hatch mates have stopped and are molting. Please girl, hang on for just 1 more week, just 1 more week.

And now the rest of the freeloaders, oh and the teenagers.

Yay! They're gone!

I didn't get Monday Mugs pics today. After I got home from the dentist I sat with the girls in their run for a bit, they were checking out my ice pack 😆 And when I put my head down on my knees (sooo tired), they all crowded around and groomed my hair. They're so sweet. Until they start pecking hard 🤣

I'm trying to teach them what "gentle" means. But I don't know quite how to do it. When they peck too hard I say "OW!", and I give them a tap on the head or back and tell them "gentle". I speak to them softly and tell them "good girls" when they're being gentle. Hopefully they start to get the picture...
