I adore your pics & property! It's amazing the way it's got nature decor, lots of hiding places, & things for chickens to do! Forgive me if mentioned before but do you have hawk problems & how/if you solved the problem if any?

In our small backyard old end-of-season garden beds continue serving the flock for entertainment & hiding

A true chicken paradise ♥️😊

Lucky you to have reasonable weather year round.

In the Spring I am sure you will get more lovely chooks. You should look at Hoovers and see what they have. I think you said you had a Midnight Majesty Marans right? Those are Hoovers birds. So you feed store sources from them.

I bet you would be able to order in whatever you want ♥️♥️♥️

It’s a good thing I can’t order in what I want from Hoovers 🥰 !

Have given any thought to what you may wish to get?
Yes we will see! So far I'm getting a dozen eggs in late March, those will be bym from a family friend. We plan on getting some feed store birds, a dozen eating ones and I believe a handful of keepers. Late spring/ early summer I will be asking the polish chicken lady for more cochin cross eggs (and maybe some polish too).
Hubby says we need a Marans, a couple silkies for brooding, and we should get "a pair of sebrights and a pair of porcelains so we have a better chance of getting a hen. But if we have a halloween rooster we are 100% keeping him. You miss Trickster too much."
I figured we'll do two batches of meaties, a dozen in spring and another dozen (with boys from hatching time) later in summer.

He says he's going to build a round-top tractor for the meaties with a coop that closes predator-proof. I'm sending him plans for cattle panel coops, that seems to be the direction he wants to go.

Sounds like a plan.

It’s a good thing I can only get certain birds from Hoovers. With all the options they have I would be needing a second barn! I am at capacity now so no new birds for me for a few years.

Oh and hubby is on the hunt for fibro birds because they're my favorite. He asked how hard it would be to get a black silkie, a black cochin bantam, and breed them for fibro babies.
The friend has a fibro hen so fingers crossed I get an egg from her and it hatches into a lil midnight chicken!
Neighbour up the road breeds those black chickens gosh what are they called…?

Oh Ayam Cemani.

I have crossed my silkies on BYM and the meat was very dark. I proceeded the cockerels I had. If you crossed your silkies on a polish or small meat bird you would get dark meat birds.

Wow! Never heard of Fibro hybrids ~ most sold by hatcheries are Easter Eggers. But some of the EEs on other breeder sites the Fibro EE's have no classic beards. Very unusual, very pretty, & very expensive.

They are just crosses with a black melonistic bird like an Ayam Cimani.
