I was warned about the breathing issues years ago by two very wise men and was made so aware , that myself and my animals never had one single issue.

Yep, I figured I could wear protective goggles & mask from the powdery dust but I couldn't put goggles/masks on our chickens if they kicked up the dust in the coop or garden. Silly, I know, but I just don't relish dealing w/negative respiratory issues & my DH is super breathing sensitive. He sneezes the minute he walks outdoors. My nephew the same way!

How'd it go? How was food prepared/brought in? Such a lovely event that larger congregations are limited from doing other than providing food banks in their area (but also not a bad idea too).

Just got back from the feast. Everything was great awesome good food. And I was given the plates leftovers and turkey carcass for my chickens. We set up the Christmas tree today too.
I supervised the reconstruction of tree (of course)

Mr Pumpkin head is doing better than the last one, but has definitely had his eyes pecked out.
One more to go which they can have next week for Thanksgiving.

Beautiful ~ very rural/isolated yet w/ many neighbors at the same time. Does your village have a general store or clinic facility for emergencies or do all rely on each other? So so lovely!

Thanks again for all the explanations ! I love how the small variation in individual feathers will make such a difference in the overall pattern. Kind of like an abstract puzzle !
It's interesting about the egg size. I wouldn't mind bigger hens laying small eggs (which hasn't really happened here) but I'm always a bit worried when smaller or slender type hens lay big eggs. It's another reason to think twice about hatching eggs from parents of very different size.

I haven't tried the wedge yet but I'll be sure to report back when I do. My partner has and said he found it really difficult...so if I fail honour will be safe !

We all have our choices that make us feel comfortable.
No one has a right to tell us otherwise.

I'm just grateful it's worked out well for my little fur and feathered friends .

I kept it well away from their faces so as not to cause problems. It's was used in the run and underneath their cardboard of their bedding

DE is one of those issues that conflict w/owners. The main negative is that the powder dust can clog up the lung sacks of humans or animals so extreme info/care of using it needs to be done. Then there's the positive that its good parasite/insect control but so are a lot of other options. It boils down to a lot of individual factors whether its a good choice or not for an owner's flock situation. I think every owner knows/decides what's best for them.

I bought a small sack of DE years ago & decided for myself I didn't want to deal w/ its warnings & gave it away to a neighbor who had way more hens than us.

You're right about it being in conflict. I don't go to the Facebook BYC group often and only to my state groups when buying or selling, but I'll see what some people "parrot" about the dangers, and it reminds me of the feed debate. People parroting claims about how dangerous it is due to the silica. They don't understand that food grade has .5% silica versus 90% for the regular, or that it's in most of the feed we buy.

I don't dust my chickens or parrots with it, though. If they had mites, I'd use permethrin powder, but in 8 years, albeit SLM (scaly leg mites) that DE can't kill, they've never had lice or mites, and they free-range with squirrels, chipmunks, and wild birds.

The funniest thing I ever saw was when some chick was posting about all the harm DE causes breathing it in, and someone found a picture of her smoking a doobie and posted it.
