And you know when they are all scattered around all over the place you just don’t see them until they are all in the one place!

I can look on the camera and see 4 chickens and wonder where are they all? 1 over there, 2 behind the door, 4 digging through the horses bedding…..
I have to clean my coop camera. All I see are two spider webs and I'm afraid to look every time I open the app. 🕷️

What’s up with Marty?

I don’t know if she is broody or having trouble laying an egg. That hen worries me all the time.

Tonight she was in a nest box, I removed her and brought her into HH-B with Mr P. Next thing I hear crashing about, I go look and there is Marty all puffed up going bok bok bok waddling to the Summer House, Mr P hot on her heals.

She hopped into the nest box in the summer house that Georgie was in and she settled in there. No way was she staying in the HH-B!

Meanwhile Georgie is happy being in any nest box 😊 I gave her some food, and water. And she hopped up on my lap for a snuggle - gosh she is a sweetie. But I hope she gets over this broody stuff soon she weighs next to nothing 😣

Oh and Mr P stayed in the Summer House with Marty. Those two are an item for sure.

Hmmm. I don't think mine is infrared.
This is what I have:

It is 200W. It is warm to the touch and I can detect heat about an inch or so away from it.
Here you can see it hanging from the window frame with poor molting Bernie facing into it.
Maybe I should get a second one and hang it at 90 degrees - on the wall to Bernie's right that way at least one hen (usually Bernie) can snuggle up close to it.
Where it is now they can put their faces up against it.

We have four of these and love 'em! One for each breeding/temp pen and one behind the 5-gallon nipple bucket in the main coop as the heater in there is set to 40F but when it gets sub-zero, that water will start freezing. The heater should be lower and it would help but hubs wanted it across from the nest boxes, so it's about 4' up.

As independent as chickens are & even put themselves to roost, it's still a chore to account for all of them in the morning & at night. Why do we love these little 2 to 10 lb dearies so much?
It was snowing today but 32F so I opened the pens and the little ones didn't want out, so shut the pens and opened the coop. The big ones didn't want out either. Guess 40 mph winds blowing snow is a bit much. Two hours later, DH tells me some chickens made it to the house, so come help. I bundled up and we hauled chickens to the coop, seven of them. I don't know how they made it up here in the first place but got snowbound and couldn't go back.

Bold little monkeys!

Mine are wimps, they won’t touch snow.

So do I. 60% of mine are now over 5 years old!

I only have four old ones; a rooster and three hens, all between 4-7. They are all I have left of the "pet quality." Fern's missing in this pic (a partridge), and one of the black ones has since passed. Guess I should get an updated picture of the remaining four, but it's more fun taking pictures of the prettier ones.

King - the rooster, is definitely the ruler around here and keeps the younger roos in their place. He lost a lot of feathers off of his head, kind of like old men do. :)

This was when I opened the coop. They weren't having it, so I missed it when those 7 snuck up here.

That's the new 12x20 Amish shed behind it that hubs is making into 4 breeding pens. He's almost done!
