Are you getting negative temps for highs in the next couple of days? Thursday, our low is -1F, high is 10. It starts warming up again after that so it's not lasting at least. We'll get a couple of weeks of that yet I'm sure though.

Hmmm well it’s turning cold, below freezing and snow. But not what we would normally expect this time of year.

Mother Nature has gone off the rails it seems. But! The horses, chooks and I are ever so thankful it is t freezing cold.

I have at least 6 hens moulting and few more just finishing up. So I am glad it isn’t freezing cold. If we can get through to the middle of Jan without any real freezing temps then I only have to get through February worrying about the cold - Feb is usually the coldest month.

It’s the snow load also that gets to me, so much work with snow. And the chooks can’t go out in the really deep snow, the horses don’t like it either.

Today I saw a flock of ducks that still hadn’t migrated south. This is a huge worry to me. They should be all south by now. The threat of AI lingers here, but I relented last weekend and let them all go outside in the run. I haven’t seen any birds about so I figured the risk was ok.

If we get the snow they are calling for this week they likely won’t be outside for bit anyways….

Looks great!

My girls love to spread bedding or leaves, too, when I dump it in their run or coop. I just put a bunch in after clean-out and say -"okay girls - get busy, you have a job to do', lol. I figure it gives them something to do to passify their need to scratch and hunt for their food.

You do go above and beyond for your girls, I am sure they appreciate all the protected space of the porch and run so they don't have to be 'cooped up' in inclement days in the ❤️ ❤️ winter.
I found out that if I throw scratch grain in the horses stalls they are kept busy all day hunting bits of grain, and they get the stalls bedded down hahahaha.

The straw I am using seems to have not been thrashed very well, there are lots and lots of seed heads just full of wheat! It’s a blast watching them find a seed head and run off with it, then wack the crap out of it to get at the wheat seeds 😊👍

Best straw ever!

I absolutely love their coloring. Halloween pompom chickens, that's what my kiddo called them when she saw the picture.
They were beautiful and we were very close as you can see by them roosting on me. It happened every day for weeks.

You gave me an idea for a couple of the white silkies, or the paint that's missing its spots so all white. I'll put some green and gold dots on them all for the Packer game. That would be hilarious if anyone would actually drive by and see that, but we only get about 12 cars a day here down this road. Ah well, might do it anyway as it sounds fun!

I do not like this site, but they actually give dying directions. They also mention to not do this in Florida or you could be sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Hmmmm - Fluffy as a zebra…. A purple zebra! Hahaha I wouldn’t do that 😊

But I might try this:

Why?

Why did i move and turn on the heat panel for Hattie. She is once again in the main coop tonight. Look at this pancake.
