I found Coco in one of my planter boxes (aka fruit crate) she was having the time of her life dust bathing
How far you have come. Now you are chicken geneticist! It's amazing isn't it. We all have learned so much.Coop was here. Given 4 birds, 2 POL pullets (Silver being one of them), a hen and a cockerel.
Edit: lost other pullet and hen.
Built a pen in the garage for 1st chicks using chicken wire and a twin bed frame. 17 chicks....they were out growing the confinement (not the physical size) at 2 weeks. Loosed in the garage. Moved to the coop with Silver at 6 weeks. Silver in garage with them (not broody), allowed out every morning. Buster (roo in coop) allowed out every afternoon. Chicks allowed out with Silver for short periods, in gradually increasing numbers, until Silver sounded an alarm, cocked her wings out parallel to her body and ran in an arc around the chicks...who then ran for the bush. Silver took up station just outside the shelter, watching back toward the patio....where a deer walked around the corner. She demonstrated she was willing to care for the chicks, so all moved back to the coop. She promptly abandoned them to Buster and resumed avoiding his attentions by staying on the roost. Food and water got put on top of the nest boxes so she could eat in peace. I knew almost nothing about chickens then.

Just like kids. Glad she is okI found Coco in one of my planter boxes (aka fruit crate) she was having the time of her life dust bathingShe’s safely in the house now with me. But I think she stressed me out too much today.
I know right?! We are all like a sponge absorbing all this knowledge, and sharing it with othersHow far you have come. Now you are chicken geneticist! It's amazing isn't it. We all have learned so much.
They are spreading out!Mrs LC is all snuggled up on my office chair in the feedroom, I put my egg apron and a couple of wooly mitts on the seat for her to roost on. She was all comfy and snoozing there when I did chores. Might just let her roost there for the rest of the winter. She can join Red, and Georgie and her twins.
Seems the chooks have taken over the whole downstairs of the barn now!
