Oh yes I know what you mean. In the summer I close the windows in the barn to lessen the sound for the neighbours.

I lost one last night that froze.

Bob I cannot believe I have not lost one egg to freezing yet this year! Last year it was so mild but I lost 2 that froze and cracked.

Of course the winter isn't over yet hahaha still lots of cold weather to go it seems, no real relief or melting in sight anytime soon here. It's a truly old fashioned winter.

I might shovel off Mount Poopmore, or put a path up to the top so I can get the chooks out there tomorrow. Today we are under an extreme cold warning, but the sun is shining so if I can get the snow off the manure pile a bit and let the sun do it's work, then maybe tomorrow I can let them out a bit, it's 'supposed' to be around -2C but we shall see if that happens.

I cannot recommend them enough. They have the activity and curiosity of a leghorn and in my experience are not fearful of humans. They are sweet chickens and decent layers of medium white eggs.

Agreed - Mr P is such a good boy, and even Bert (who admittedly was only 1/2 polish) was a lovely Roo with the ladies. And his sister Betty is a cheeky little thing but very sweet. They all are very nosy about what's going on and are not afraid to go exploring - and they look gorgeous!

Just don't get Frizzles! Too much worry about the cold with them, Clyde, Curly and Betty give me nothing but worry with them being cold.

I LOVE the look of frizzles, but I'd never have them here. Unless they could be house chickens. But that won't happen

Yep, if I hatch any frizzles they will be adopted out. Cute but too delicate for our Michigan mud

Poor Penelope. Thanks for giving her some relief.

Well to be fair, I do worry every time I have to do some intervention I know the risks that can happen but those risks a less than not if I didn't do anything, have to say, dealing with the chickens is much safer than the horses!

Penelope is doing well, but I have been keeping her in the feedroom; I now have Red, Raven, Mrs LC, Georgie and her dumplings all in there at night. I cannot wait for the warmer weather so they can all get back were they belong!

They are slow because chickens don't matter. They are "less than".

Containment has failed spectacularly but they refuse to budge. The Chinese are vaccinating their poultry.

Not sure why they (govt and producers) are not pushing for this here, it's such a simple measure and likely highly cost effective. sheesh!

The reason things like Brucellosis in cattle has been pretty well stopped is through rigorous inspections and vaccinations, why any farmer wouldn't want their extremely valuable assets to be protected is beyond me - if I were a huge egg/broiler producer I would be banging on pots and pans demanding my 'money makers' be treated so they never became ill in the first place. Are cattle that much more of an asset?

Such a waste of money and time, when at any moment it could all come crashing down because of something that can only be seen with an electron microscope and could potentially be halted with a simple jab - how incredibly terrifying.

Meanwhile my neighbourhood pork factory farm is such a smelly place, if I lived next to them I would be moving! their three barns are massive... how much poopies are they producing?
