How old are your gals, and are they still with you? Like other old animals, they do become more frail with age.

I think my 10-year-old flock leader, Tess, is on her way out. I've used Clavamox twice in recent months when she seemed depressed and off her food. She rebounded quickly both times, and took the remainder of the course voluntarily in hamburger. Not this time, though, and I don't want to force pill her, as these "off" spells keep occurring. She is probably just near her time -- a little confused about roosting and eating, and standing around quite a bit.

It's tough to see the old girls go, even knowing everything dies.

So hard to watch. I'm so sorry.

I love that your chickens come to you when you call them. Mine always show up for treats, but don't respond to their names.

No matter though. I have so many triplets and twins that I have to call three names at once to get the one I want.

Penelope died shortly afterwards she was almost 10 yrs old. She actually went pretty fast and didn’t linger. Only about a day, then she was gone.

Yes it’s tough when they get old and pass away. I seem to have had way too many elderly pets over the years. But they don’t live forever, you are correct there.

The first ‘day’ is 24hrs after you started. So if you put them in the incubator at 9am on the 5th them at 9am on the 6th is day 1.

Back story of this picture taken 10 minutes ago.
Aero went in to lay her daily egg, and I saw her pushing around the golfball in the nest. I moved it aside to make her feel more comfortable, but I was so wrong, she pushed it back into the nest and gave me a mean snorting sound. She wanted that golfball just where it was supposed be! Cooky chook.

Wow - she really doesn't care about the snow at all. Amazing.

She has been all over the yard again today. I think she finds the others boring and goes off on her own frequently.

They are beautiful! I've avoided them at the store because they're a production breed...but maybe a heritage one will be healthier.
I am worried about those big ol face flappies with how cold and soggy we get out here.

Considering my mother-in-law wants 2 leghorns, if I don't hatch any I will have to purchase some, and have her pay me back with a bag of feed.

More leghorns is more better.
