Now that winter is coming up to its end (even if it doesnt feel like it 🤣) dad and I are starting to think more seriously about plans for our flock going forward.

The other day chicks were mentioned. Dad said another 5 to make an nice round 10 would be perfect. So I've been researching breeds to look out for (CCL would be amazing but those huge single combs would be a frostbite nightmare).

Most important though, we've been throwing ideas back and forth regarding the coop/run situation. I mentioned the safety concern about the gas meter (plus other things). Since I'm the one caring for them, he wants everything to be as easy as possible, which I appreciate but safety is more important than how far I have to walk.

So I thought, why not just convert this old playhouse (something we've discussed before but then shelved it) into a coop and attached run?

It's old, but very sturdy, and with some alterations it would be perfect. And I think it would be relatively easy to convert compared to other ideas we've had, like digging up the run's foundation posts, somehow getting it up and on wheels, and moving it...
I would suggest chantclair - or Wyandottes- both were bred specifically for the cold. They are also I have heard ok with the heat.

There always seems to be something I have overlooked in my coop design.

Check out the icicles on the coop roof.

In this instance the metal roof seems to have exacerbated the bad placement of the latch on the nestbox of the main coop. It should not be on the roof but rather on the side. Otherwise you need a hammer to dig out the latch so you can collect eggs.

I need to move the latch when it warms back up. Oh well.

You evil temptress! You recommend a Wyandottey?
They are hard masters of their domain. My roo locks me in the closet until he thinks it’s treats time. Lets me out just for his enjoyment! IMG_5020.png

But those icecycles look so pretty 🤩

News of the neighbor lady I sent to hospital. I picked her up from same hospital and she’s now comfortable at her own home. Doctor said she’s fine but high blood pressure has been treated.
(I know that feeling)
I’m just glad I could help her out with her emergency
You are a good person. I'm glad you were there to help.
