That's only true if BOTH parents are barred. If only the roo is barred (or is single barred) the head spot is the same size regardless of gender. The large head spot on roos is due to being double barred so he looks like he's white with black stripes.

Hence Shirley- he’s supposed to be a she. Oh well, at least he’s nice and quiet. Though he and Mr P are now at the fighting stage.

Not so. ONLY if the HEN is barred and roo isn't will the auto-sexing occur. If the roo is pure bred barred and the hen isnt barred, ALL the chicks will be barred.

Eggsactly with Shirley - a black copper Marans Roo on BR hens.

Should have been caught as a cockerel, I should have been closer keeping an eye on the chick when I got them. Oh well.

I just came back from the coop, and here’s the scoop. I’m wearing poop ! Yuck . BoPeeps decided that I would make a good target and she’s quite accurate.

I was baptized by the now deceased Bananito... on my head... with a cecal poop. I can tell you I washed my hair three times before I got out of that shower!

I've only ever had 3, and they are such beautiful, docile hens. I don't remember if they initially had some white feathers. They are all black now. But, they are 8 years old now and I will miss them so much when they are gone, so that's why I went with Australorps this time. I normally would lean toward Buff Orpingtons. I'm not very adventurous here. We live in a rain forest, and these two breeds have been the healthiest in these conditions.

I don't know how I could have forgotten this. In my very first flock, 10 years ago, I had 2 Australorps. I named them LaVerne and Shirley, but LaVerne turned out to be Verne. We lost most of our first flock to a bald eagle attack. We didn't have them very long. The river has fish again, so the eagles are not bothering anyone's chickens anymore, but we all had a rough year around here.

I've been in love with the Australorps from the beginning. They have such sweet soulful eyes and great personalities. Here are two of my 3 current 8 year olds with a couple flock mates.

I bought that little coop 8 years ago to raise these 3 australorps in a climate controlled garage room. I've kept it ever since, although we've never used it since then. We call it the restaurant at the end of the universe. We used to make it a feeding station, but it leaks now so we don't do that anymore.

Thank you. They have had a good life. They are all very healthy so far. I have heard others say they had Australorps live for 10 years or more. Fun to have them that long!!!
