I am so happy Bert got a nice home.

He is so pretty and he looks so content with his bevy of hens to look after. Love this for him and for you!

Chick Update

The difference between Day old and 3 day old chicks is striking. I've never had day old chicks before only 3 day old chicks.

I was sort of concerned at how inactive they seemed to be the first day. They just mostly stayed under the brooder. Let me tell you something. 3 day old chicks are a bundle of energy. Scratching and running around. That was what I was used to seeing. I really was concerned about the "un-named" chick as it wasn't doing much. Just hanging out under the brooder.

Those concerns are gone. These are the chicks I am used to.

I think we have a name for chick 2. Eve has been calling her Chirpy. Mrs BY Bob loves Niamh. The name was suggested by @LozzyR as I did not know the name or story.

So Eve and Mrs BY Bob have agreed her name is Niamh and her nickname is Chirpy. We shall see if it sticks.

They are precious. They look and sound like strong chicks. I can’t wait to see what they will look like as they grow.

It is time my friends. After tomorrow the silkie eggs are no longer for eating, they are for hatching. I have 1 dozen pre-sold. Depending on how they lay I could get that in 3 days or it may take 4. After that dozen is collected I am collecting for myself. I plan on collecting for 1 week and set them. If they are laying good still and no one else besides Poppet goes broody I may push it to 11 days and see just how many I can get. Right now I am saying I will not keep any from this first hatch, they will be sold as soon as they are eating and drinking.

Poppet is broody though and that has me thinking. Currently she is not 100% committed. She is about 85% there. She has not laid a egg in over a week and will spend most of her time on her nest. I think if I gave her a egg or two that would really snap her into it for the long haul. After the 2nd day of her broodiness all the other silkies stopped trying to lay in her box so she has not had any eggs to stay on. If she is still in this state when I load the incubator up for myself I could give her 1 or two eggs and see what happens. This way if I am fortunate and do manage to hatch off a blue chick or two in the incubator I can immediately run out and stuff it under Poppet as her eggs should be hatching at the same time. 2 blues, I would be thrilled with just 2 blues to hatch and grow out in hopes of a pullet.

My house power has been spitting and sputtering and browning out all morning kicking the modem off line and it’s frustrating to say the least!

It's been pure windy all day long. New power lines got re-strung a couple weeks ago so no power outs since. The linemen had to go thru our backyard & were fascinated w/ Silkie Keiko.

Very exciting indeed! It will be fun to follow the hatch.

Good morning everyone

Rough night here, thunderstorms rolled through every 90 min, wild weather, chooks weathered it fine and the horses. But the dumplings have been housed in the feedroom on their own since Georgie went hormonal. They have Res and Mrs LC in there so hopefully they weren’t too afraid of the noisy weather.

Silver based ground color. Pattern subject to change through the adult moult (12 week one). Going to be a stunning bird.

Yep, they are just beautiful. I saw no wattles, however with 1/2 silkie you never know. Let's hope pullet.
