I was just thinking it looked very Norman Rockwell-ish!

@rural mouse You should definitely submit this one for the calendar contest when it opens in the summer - bookmark it so you can find it then!!!
Agreed - it’s a lovely photo, the colours are amazing.

I wondered how to make a chicken splint. I wonder how fast those can be ordered...
I have made splints for my own fractured fingers using cardboard and tape (I ditched the fancy one they put on my severely fractured ring finger - it was too cumbersome and dangerous working with the horses - I splinted it with a cardboard splint and tape).

Cardboard and Vet Wrap would be good with a chook, but I think the Vet Wrap alone would be just as good, it gets stiff with a couple of layers.

Came home to more mugs...in a moment...

But first....end of an aerial battle. While walking Sherlock (after the mugs), had a dogfight overhead. I was so wrapped up in watching that I forgot to take pics/vid until it was almost over.

above the tree center of pic: a red tailed hawk is getting thoroughly beat up by a single crow. I'm guessing the mate is sitting on a nest, but I've no idea where. It ranged from the open field near the blue horse trailer to over the hedge and spruce trees to over the house, the chickens' favorite area, the coop and then the olives on the opposite side of the coop. A nest inside the spruce trees seems likely. The hawk gave up and let the wind carry it farther off. The crow proceeded to do some light swoops (like scooting over the wave tops) back up the valley towards the spruce trees. Chickens were unconcerned.

Now for the mugs

so I found some tongue depressors, but cardboard would be better? I have that. Tackling it in the morning, too tired tonight. He's eating and drinking well but can't put weight on leg yet. He tries and it gives way under him.

I was thinking of her! Remembering your post with her unmistakable print! - Was it in the snow?

Same foot, same toe. I'm not keen on trying to "reset" it before taping it down, which would inflict a lot more pain to do without having the expertise to do it correctly anyway. So many chickens do have broken toes and seem to get by okay. But I did read that a permanent crook could be painful to walk on even after healing.

My goal is to relieve current pain at least. Hopefully it heals more straight but I've heard many people say taping in a boot didn't straighten it. But the boot seemed to relieve her today, she was running around on it and scratching with it, which she didn't want to do yesterday. But it would have to be on longer to really judge (e.g. if she's limping again by the end of day as she was today after the boot came off).
Why take the boot off? Seems counter-productive? It's not gonna heal in just one day?

🤤

Tax:

I let the girls out for about an hour... But I got hungry so I got them back in the run so I could have some bread (I was right, it's a little dense/doughy in the middle but not undercooked. I like it!)

No pics of them outside (phone was charging) but here they are begging to go out again just now 🤣
