Is lavender also called a self-blue? or does self-blue mean that two lavender parents will always breed true? Lavender & self-blue are terms I wasn't aware of when we started w/backyard birds 14 yrs ago. Then terms like pearl, mille fleur, porcelain, exchequer, etc, were new terms to me too.

I think so. It isn't the same as Blue black splash, but it does do a wash type dilution. It affects red colors also. That's where the Isabella color comes from.

I was going to trim my mucky butts today but it’s raining and I hate wet feathers!

Yuck...smelly chicken feathers. One thing we've noticed is the fluffy Silkie feathers & softer Dominique feathers smell less foul than tighter-feathered breeds. It's probably why the Pilgrims favored the Dominique feathers for their beddings & pillows.

A Dom owner said their Dom's feathers were softer & less smelly than their other breeds & said to sniff a Dom vs another hard-feather breed & notice the difference. I thought they were blowing smoke so we put our nose to the Dom feathers vs Breda & there was no odor on the Dom plus the feathers actually were softer! We then tried it w/ our Silkies & they were fairly odor-free too. But we could smell from a distance our White Leghorn if her feathers got wet ~ she was a sweetie but stinky when wet.

This is the third time today I have noticed Jolly just tearing into poor Daisy. This morning Jolly grabbed her by to back and I was so upset thinking Jollynwas attempting to breed her. But then Jolly chased her away again a few hrs later, and just now Jolly chased her right down the yard.

Not sure what all that means…


FYI dumplings are now 18 weeks old. Wonder when they will lay eggs… or crow!


Edit - Jolly just picked a fight with Silver! Poor Silver was just walking by! But she thumped Jolly good, not sure what’s up with her (yes I called Jolly her), now Silver is dust bathing in the sand box

I like it, so be it - hence forth Sir Shirley shall now be known as Sir Surely.

Oh, man, I can relate to that video so much, too! We live in Michigan and had intense wind storms a few weeks ago (the northern part of Michigan got ice storms, then wind, and it snapped the tops of all the trees off). So many trees down around me, too, and found a shed hanging from some power lines. Yikes!

We witnessed someone's popup canopy blow across 8 lanes of freeway! Our gusts get anywhere from 65 to 100 mph here ~ what a mess! We bury all our popup frame legs in the ground so we lose only the covers:
