:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy:jumpyThe first chick has hatched!! It hatched around 8 am. It is a very strong and robust chick. When I shined the light on it a few minutes ago it stood straight up and loudly voiced it's opinion about the world so far. I suspected when I first saw it still very wet that it did not look black. Mom argued it was black as night. It is partially dry and I was right, the first one out is BLUE!!:yesss::wee. My goodness the relief I felt when I saw those silvery down feathers. I did not realize just how much anticipation, excitement and a little bit of worry had built up since the moment I realized Davy was blue and blue chicks were a possibility. I just hope the rest of the hatch goes smoothly now. The pressure is off I have my blue chick, anymore that hatch are icing on the cake. I am going to mark this one with a tiny zip tie when I remove it from the incubator. This one is mine and not going anywhere.
Congratulations! I'm so happy you got your blue. :wee :wee :wee

Sir Surely (nee Shirley) has a new home and three lovely hens to call his own. He will be missed! But I am super happy he is close by and has his own flock ♥️

The lady is planning on getting more hens and I am more than happy to set eggs for chicks for her 🥰

I will introduce her to chicken math 😉
Congrats Surely! That's awesome news.

When I decided to get a few silkies, I was hoping to find Black, Blue, and Partridge. I think I ended up with Black, and either White or Buff. The yellow ones it is hard to tell which color they will feather out as.

Is it wise to encourage squirrels around chicken feed/seeds & chickens? We chased our baby squirrel away. I'm not a fan of rodent type wildlife around our yard & cats aren't great at catching fast elusive squirrels ~ they steal from bird feeders & do damage getting into them. They are cute as can be...just not in my yard.

Squirrels are not permitted in our yard.

I post them with nice photos and prices. If they are willing to pay then they are likely to give a good home.

At any rate I didn’t charge her a price but gifted him to her and her family. She has texted me some photos, and seems that her daughter will be ‘carrying him around’ in her arms for ever. 🥰
How marvelous. 🥰🥰🥰

Ha - I wish! Zoom in and you will see they are not flowers but dandelion heads.
Why my Princesses won’t eat dandelion flowers before they go to seed is a mystery to me.
Aurora was eating the seeds the other day. I had never seen that before. Aster was learning from her that you can eat those things.

Pecked bare.

Mine eat some of the leaves
Mine eat everything but the flower itself. They have killed most of them in my yard. There are only 2 or 3 left in remote locations like wedged in by the pool pump for example.

Hattie has one she especially loves tucked in behind the coop that she hasn't eaten enough of to kill. It's like she is farming it.

Chick #2 is out. It has had about 2 hours to dry up some and I now have 2 blues!! A 3rd egg has a good size pip and looks to be starting the process of trying to zip. I give it another hour or so. 6 more pips that I know of. I do not see myself sleeping much tonight. I will be creeping on the progress of those eggs.
BLUES!!!!!!! :wee :wee :wee :wee

They're such great food...for everyone! I've been getting seeds from people I know (who don't spray their yards) so I can spread them out here. Seeing as the deer eat them too....

We had to get rid of Jabberwocky as well. Can't keep them in a suburban setting.

He was such a handsome man!!!

And look at him stoically refraining from eating those delicious meal worms....need to tidbit to the ladies and show them who is the great provider! (she says chuckling - sorry, Bob, he says it is him, not you that provides!)
